Excessive Drool and Hand Chewing as symptoms?
My son is 25 months old and was diagnosed with reflux when he was about 2 months old. I thought he outgrew it because he stopped spitting up, but in retrospect, I think that was not true. I assumed he was just having trouble with teething, but now that he has all of his teeth (including his 2-year molars), it is clear that something is still wrong. His regular pediatrician recently put him on Prevacid, and it seems to be helping quite a bit, but things still are not great. The main thing is that he has these times where he drools insane amounts and furiously chews his hands. That seems to coincide with more fussiness and worse sleep. Has anyone experienced these symptoms with a toddler with reflux? Any help would be appreciated.

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
emily does both and she is 23 months, she has been drooling and has all her teeth (since she was 16 months) too. I asked the GI about the hand chewing and drooling and he said they are not necessarily symptoms of reflux- but didn't go into any other detail. I personally feel that when emily's reflux is at it's worst that's when we see the drool.

Dx with silent reflux at 8 months
FPIES, DGE, MSPI. Recently diagnosed with EC (Eosin. colitis and now Primary immune deficiency disease.
Also mom to Nathan. born Jan.20th, 2009, MPI . so far dx with reflux and has an extremely sensitibe GI system. Also dx with primary immune deficiency disease.
Yup, us too. Jazz is almost 2 and finger/hand chewing for us means she's refluxing. Also teeth grinding is a sign for us as well, which I used to mistake for teething. HTH

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
For us it meant the reflux was flaring as well. Some kids do it because they are trying to get to the "pain" of the GERD. Sad, but true....:-(

Thanks for the input! I am glad to know I am not a alone here. It makes me crazy because everyone is always asking if he is teething. And it definitely makes him more prone to picking up every cold around him. We go to the Gastroenterologist soon (for the first time since he was very little). I hope they can give us some help. I just would have thought that the Prevacid would be helping more.

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
Adriane will actually chew until she breaks the skin on her hands. It is actually kind of sad. She will have scabs on her hands when her reflux is really bad.

Same here. That's one reason it really concerns me. People don't get why hand chewing is a big deal. It's a big deal when his poor little hands are all cut up!

I know. You think it shouldn't be a big deal but when they are actually chewing through their skin it is bad.

yianni'smom
Yianni was born 09/08. He has MSPI. He was diagnosed with GERD at two weeks. He is currently taking Prevacid three times per day (7.5, 7.5, & 15). He was on Reglan for eight months and was doing much better. We took him off because of the hype. Now we are riding the reflux roller coaster again.
Wow! I just thought this was new baby behavior. Yianni constantly eats his hands. Sometimes he tries to eat the whole fist. I can't believe how far those fingers can go down the throat. Once I thought he was trying to make himself gag. He also chews the nipple and tries to have it gag himself. I guess it's reflux. Thanks!

Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.
Katie has spd and is hyptonic so that is why she drools and is seeking stimulation through her mouth.

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but what is spd? I am wondering whether there could be more going on than just the reflux. When he was littler he had pyloric spasms too and few other stomach issues.
