Gail - mom to a six year old with reflux and an infant with reflux
ng tube, rsv, pneumonia
My little one has basically had reflux since birth. If she lies flat she pukes so we have been using an ar pillow since she was just a few weeks old. She was officially diagnosed with reflux at eight weeks old following episodes of coughing and turning blue. She did great for a few weeks on prevacid 7.5 1x daily and thickened similac advance formula. At the time of her diagnosis, she passed a modified swallow test checking for aspiration. At twelve weeks, she was hospitalized with pnemonia and rsv. Her reflux flared up with a vengance. She is now on prevacid 7.5 2x's daily and her formula was changed to thickened alimentum. During her week in the hospital, she stopped eating by mouth and now is home with a ng tube. Two weeks later, she still gags and does not want to eat more than an ounce or so from the bottle. Prior to rsv and pneumonia, she was a great eater (4oz's every 3 hours). Anyone have any ideas for getting her to eat? All suggestions appreciated.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Oh my....prayers to you and your little one! The only thing I can think of is maybe try a different bottle/nipple combo or syringe feeding until she wants to eat again.

Prevacid can decrease appetite as well, so even though the reflux has a chance to get under control, eating can still be a challenge.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Have you tried just pulling the NG for 24-48 hours to see if she will eat again????

She is probably not eating because an NG tube is extremely uncomfortable to have down the back of the throat. that's why I suggested pulling it and see what happens.

We tried that about 4 times with Jedd before giving up. He was tube fed due to his heart defect though. Then we found out how bad his GERD really was....:-( He ended up completely G tube fed for almost 18 full months.

There are a few other tube feeders here so fell free to ask tube questions.

ng tube pulled out
Well...At 3:00am, my little one woke me up crying. She has pulled her tube out. I really thought that I had it taped down so that she could not pull it out. After seeing the suggestion about letting her try to eat w/out the tube, I was going to ask dr. about pulling it to try. I guess baby wanted to skip that part. My fingers are crossed that she will eat now that it is out.

Since you are going tube free today I'd go ahead and log what is being taken in at each feeding and whether or not it is staying down. That way if she is doing well you can call the Dr and show him or tell him what's on the list and he can agree to keep the tube out.

The list can also be used to let you know if not enough is being taken so that the tube will need to be reinserted. I live and die by my food logs for Jedd. I have done them for just about his entire life. I even calculate exactly how many cals he has taken for the day.

Check with your
doctor first!
