6 Month Old with Milk Allergy and Reflux
Hello! I just came across this site and am really excited to talk to others who are having the same issues as me. Its been such a long tough road. I have a 2.5 year old girl with not one problem so I knew something was wrong with my son from day one. It took me 8 weeks and giving up bf to learn he had silent reflux and 4 mths, a ped GI and weight loss to learn about his milk allergy. Every feed is a struggle and a schedule is non-existant. He eats 15-20 oz a day if I'm lucky and 2-5 oz at night waking twice. What are your babies consuming? He wieghs 14.11 lbs (just under 25%) now from the Elecare Vanilla. Does anyone let theirs cry it out? I am so worried about creating bad eating and sleep habits. We just started him on Happy Bellies rice cereal on the 26th. Eats about .5 tbsp in am and pm. So far so good, but no help with the sleeping. I read on one of the forums about corn in the Elecare. Going to take him to an allergist. Thinking about trying rice cereal with suppliments. Will ask GI next week. Never tried soy, but scared to try it as so many are also allergic to soy. Thoughts on any of the above?

Andrea: Mom to 3 crazy girls!
Jackie (3/01)
Payton (9/03)
Abby (4/06) Prevacid 7.5mg (evening), MSPI, goats milk (currently trying to wean off Prevacid)
Welcome! My dd Abby had MSPI also. I'm not familiar with Happy Bellies cereal but make sure to check the label for milk and soy ingredients. We used Beechnut as it was the only one that I could find that was milk and soy free. Also, are you giving the Prevacid on an empty stomach and waiting 30mins to feed? Also, make sure that you don't give the Axid with the Prevacid. I think that have to be at least 2hrs apart but check with your pharmacist. You might want to ask about trying Prevacid in the pm and see if that helps with sleep at night. Abby did really well on Prevacid but some babies get stomach cramps from it. I would ask to try the Prevacid in the pm and if it doesn't help you might want to ask about trying a different PPI. Sleep is hard for these guys. We weren't able to get Abby sleeping well until her reflux was under control with Neocate and Prevacid, which was when she was about 7 months old. Then I knew that she wasn't in pain but I could never do CIO with her ( just my personal choice).

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
My dd isn't MSPI, but I can help on the CIO. We only let dd CIO when we were certain the reflux was under control, and only for an hour, since crying jags tended to increase GERD sx. My dd also only made about 20 oz/day for the longest time (I finally got her to eat 28 oz at 11 months, and then it was time to wean to milk - go figure). Allie has never gotten past the 25th percentile for any measurements, but I'm only 5'2" and 100 lbs and dh is 5'10" and 170 lbs, so no one expected her to be big.

Have you tried dreamfeeding to get some extra calories in him? That was the only way I ever got Allie to get over the 20 oz mark, and we did the dreamfeed until 9 months old.

Thanks for the replies! I give the Axid and Prevacid right before feeding. He doesn't eat much in the am, 2 oz at best. Will try to wait 30 min and start giving the Prevacid in the pm. Fortunately, Gavin is doing so much better from the day I posted. He had a terribel ear infection and sore throat. Eating 20 oz every day now and tons of rice cereal. The Happy Bellies rice cereal is awesome. No milk or soy and contains DHA and Probiotics.
