Please help, Weston is allergic to elecare!
Hi All, Everytime I feel as though we have made progress, it seems like we are back at stage 1. Weston was seen at the Pediatric GI about a month ago and she tested his stool after I had been breastfeeding him since day 1 and said that he was highly allergic to my breast milk. All dairy and soy and put him on an elemental diet: elecare which is just amino acid based. He was doing okay on the formula for about a week and then gradually started vomiting more and more and fussing more and more. Finally it made its way to the breaking point on our vacation. He was vomiting at least 15 times in an hour, screaming in pain, pulling his legs into his stomach and just pretty much uncomfortable in any position we had him in. I was frantic b.c we were away from home and my aunt suggested that we just try pure rice milk for the time being until we get back home. We followed her advice as she had gone through something similar as well with her little one. After we took him off Elecare, he was great. The occasional spit up but, just great. His stools were harder than normal and pretty grainy though... I knew that this was just a quick fix until we get back to the GI but i dont know what else they could give him if he is allergic to the elecare too. I can't keep him just on the rice milk b.c there is no nutritional value for him to thrive. He is already on Prevacid, 1/2 tablet twice daily for the GERD...but omg, i dont know what else to do! Any suggestions or thoughts of encouragement would be greatly appreciated!!! I am going to call the GI in the am... concerned!

how old is he? depending on age rice milk with fortified vitamins might be an option. but let me tell you you are not alone! my dd did horrible on neocate (elecare's equivalent). I am sure if you let your GI know what he does bad on, elecare, and what he does good on, rice milk,... a compromise will be made. my dd did very well on nutrmigen and prevacid. (is he on the 1/2, 15mg tab or the 1/2, 30mg tab???) you might want to consider further testing such as allergy or endoscopy just talk with your GI about his feeding and stooling habits and see what they say

Weston is 5 m/o..that would be great if we could keep him on the rice milk, b.c he does so well on it. We may try him on nutrmigen next..i just feel like the GI just guesses and says that the elecare is the most hypo allergenic thing out there and that there is no way he can be allergic to it...but guess what?? he isn't with Weston 24/7 either. He is on the 1/2 15 mg tablet right not sure if it is even helping..but when he is just on the rice milk he hardly ever it might be helping. Thanks for your help, I will check into the nutrmigen and see..

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Nutrmagin was a Godsend for Katie. Her combo was Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac.

If your little could tolerate nutramigen, it is a much cheaper and easier route to go. My Meggy did not tolerate any infant formula for long. She reacted worst to the elemental formulas. Neocate, elecare, peptamin JR., Vital jr. and others.

She is currently taking Ultracare for kids. It is not nutritionally complete on it's own and we have to fortify it with a recipe the GI gave us to meet her specific needs. We also add Plexy-vits. Ultracare is a rice based Medical food. We know that Meggy is allergic to both dairy and soy. She also doesn't show allergy to corn, but reacts severely to even the smallest amounts.

Our first year felt like a nightmare with the amount of pain she dealt with. I keep food diaries and symptom diaries with her formulas for a long time. When she was reacting to everything and they said it is just not possible, I sat down and compared all the ingredients with everything she had reacted to. Some of the oils were the same, but mostly the corn content.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
Z is on Elecare and I suspect he may be mildly allergic to it as well...we are doing allergy testing this week. Elecare is corn based, so if he has a lactose, soy and corn allergy then you're in trouble! I would think that you could fortify the rice milk...I'm tempted to try it! Z has a GI appt today!

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
A couldn't tolderate Nutramigen or Neocate. She did okay with Neocate for a while and then it gradually got worse. Well, she is allegic to rice and corn so I guess that explains the reactions. Anyway, if he is doing okay on rice milk I would put a call into the GI and see what you need to add to make it nutrionally sound for him.

I hope you can find something that works.
