alex's mom
Alex was dx with silent reflux at 3 weeks old. Previously on Prevacid SoluTabs 15mg daily, now on trial of no medication. Was thought to have oral aversion, saw feeding specialist who says he's just not interested in food--no aversion at all. Slowly coming around to food. 15 months, 19lbs, 7 oz.
Periactin (anyone with experience?)
Hi Ladies! I hope that everyone is having a Merry Christmas! I have not written in a while only because I have been busy trying to get Alex to eat (using distraction, which has worked these last two months-not easy). Alex is going through another hunger strike. Usually, he will let me feed him something (a couple of spoonfuls at least!). He is currently sick with a cough and a runny nose so I hope that is why he is not eating. Versus a regression, which I am SO worried about! He has not eaten, other than a few crackers, for about 5 days! Sigh. His therapist for eating aversion has suggested we try Periactin. I have searched the threads on here and found a little information (in some kiddos it caused drowsiness, others hyperactivity). Did anyone notice a positive significant increase in appetite? If so, is it worth the hyperactivity or drowsiness? Any advice would be helpful. I'm struggling here, ladies. I'm about to cry from frustration or lose my mind.

Liz, mom to Donnie 12/2005
Surgery for Pyloric Stenosis at 5 weeks old
GERD since 4 weeks old
Colic until 13 weeks old
Delayed Gastric Emptying
Surgery for Tubes and Adenoidectomy at 14 months old
Anemic since 9 month check
Febrile Seizures
Speech Therapy
MEDS: Zyrtec, Nasonex, Xopenex,
Vitamins with iron, and back on Prevacid as of 12/2008
We tried Periactin twice and both times Donnie had extreme hyperactivity!!! The first time was when he was about 3-4 months old and I am serious when I say he stayed up all night long just kicking and was restless and fidgity. His ped discontinued it immediately and so I can't say whether it would have helped any. The second time he was older and he had the same hyperactivity to it so it was discontinued again. We had to deal with a really bad aversion to only the bottle, it was a constant struggle with him on good days only managing maybe 12 ounces, but we never struggled with food. I am sorry for your frustration and wish I could tell you more, but this was our experience with it. Good luck, I hope you find something that will help! -Liz

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site:
We have not used it personally they never let us even though I Have asked many times.

From what I'e heard from others at P2P it is a drug that must be cycled. You can't give it continuously or is willnot work. Fro example most of th ekids did well on it for about 3 weeks and then off for a full week. Then they repeat they cycle.

Hope that helps.

Not sure why our GI or the rehab clinic would never let us try it....they just didnt' even though I have asked. I mean, we did Reglan for 16 weeks before giving up.....weird I know.

MegaMan's mom
we have been using pericatin for 9 months and have had great success. my son takes it for 3-4 weeks and then off a week before starting up again. we noticed severe tiredness the first few days, but that was short lived. we were amazed at how well he actually slept at night (he use to be up coughing, runy nose etc)- it is also an antihistamine so we think he has allergies. The med helps with eating, allergies, and sleeping. we give him a different antihistamine the week he does not take the periactib. I would recommend it. My pedi was not thrilled the med was prescribed by the GI as he has seen kids get relaly hyperactive, but he is now happy with the effect. Good luck

DS #1 (7/05) - Just ReDX'd Refluxer! Prevacid Solutab starting 4/8/09. Lots of food and environmental allergies. Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, Speech Delays, Developmental Delays, Severe Muscle Tone Weakness.
DS #2 (1/08) ReDX'd refluxer. Milk and soy allergies with Soy Lecithin allergies. Oat milk drinker, Rice protein powder, DHA, and vitamins added for bulk and needed nutrition. Weak muscle tone, slightly developmentally delayed, SPD confirmed.
I wish I had more advice for you. It worked for my son, and very, very fast!!! They said give it 5 days, 24 hours later it worked for him. Then 24 hours after that he had a bad reaction to it and he's allergic. Yeah. So, if he hadn't had that reaction, it would have been worth it. Yes, he slept more. But he pretty much never sleeps so we were stoked about that side effect. He didn't get hyperactive, but, as I said, we were on it 3 days total so that might not have set in yet. I just couldn't beleive it worked so fast and so well.

Thanks, ladies! I'm still looking into it. I just hate to add more medication, but I will if that appears to be the last resort. Hope everyone has a very Happy New Year and may 2009 bring improvements of health to our little ones!

Hi, I am new to this forum. I live in NZ & my 14month old started Periactin 3 weeks ago to stimulate his appetite. I googled Periactin & came across this site! It worked within 24hrs of starting it & he started to eat more in a day than he used to eat in an entire week!! He has a severe aversion to all foods & would never put anything in his mouth. For the first time he is actually trying to feed himself & he has had the biggest weight gain he's ever had this month. In NZ you can only get it in tablet form so we crush 1/4 of a tab and put it in his food twice a day. The effects have started to slow down/wear off in the last week although it is still a HUGE improvement - i wish we'd known about it earlier! As far as his behaviour goes, there has been no hyperactivity or drowsiness that we've noticed. He is much happier as he has a full tummy these days! Hope this helps!
