need a refresher on prevacid
I really need a refresher course on prevacid, it has been 2 years since we have given it so I have forgotten some things. Our ped pretty much left it up to us how we want to give it, either once a day or split it into 2 doses one in morning and one at night. Anyway, she told us to dissolve it in water and then give it to him. My thing is, he does well just putting it in his mouth and letting it disolve. Which is the more effective way? I know letting it dislove in water can leave granules behind and by putting it in his mouth he will at least get the whole pill. Just wondering, I want to give it to him which ever way will let him benefit most from it. Also, when he was on it before we did the one dose a day, anyone have good results splitting the dose? I think I may do that and try it, I haven't decided. Thanks! -Liz

Andrea: Mom to 3 crazy girls!
Jackie (3/01)
Payton (9/03)
Abby (4/06) Prevacid 7.5mg (evening), MSPI, goats milk (currently trying to wean off Prevacid)
We have always found it more effective to split it into 2 doses. We give Abby hers on a baby spoon with a little water. I would think that it is okay to give it to him in his mouth as long as he doesn't chew it. I know that Abby would chew it right away like her vitamin.

Sara, Mom to Isobel 10/01/08 Dx Silent reflux @ 6 wks. Prevacid 22.5mg split in 2 doses. Pepcid .5ml twice a day. Diagnostically confirmed milk protein, egg and cat allergy. Suspected corn, pea and squash allergy. Trialed Alimentum and Elecare without success, currently on Isomil Advance RTF with moderate success. Barium Swallow and UGI 3/08 Pondering a ph probe and endoscopy.
I think I saw in the latest newsletter a study that said that in the first week splitting the dose is most effective (pt responded more quickly than just single dose) but by the second week a single dose is just as effective. But that was a study on infants. My GI said that when it's time to wean he advises his pts to wean down to a single morning dose as it is more effective in the morning vs the afternoon but that otherwise splitting into two doses keeps the levels of the drug more consistant. Hope this helps.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
We do just the one dose in the evenings, since my lo wakes up howling to eat. We also just pop it in the cheek - found it to be more effective for us not to pre-dissolve it. I'd say try a few different ways and see how he responds. Don't let him chew it though - the granules need to stay intact until they reach the small intestine to be effective.

Melina 7/24/02 now reflux free!!
Ella 5/3/05 GERD, asthma, hypotonia, food intolerances, esophagitis, IBS //
Ava 5/3/05 asthma, food allergies
Pic: My girls! They are getting so big!
We were also told to split doses to am/pm. We also give it 30 moinutes before meals or 2 hours after. That seems to make a difference in the absorption. HTH! Sorry that he has been having problems that require you to have to go back on prevacid. :( I hope it will help quickly. Have a wonderful Christmas!!

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
a gulp of water or juice afterward would wash everything left in the mouth. I would love to give it like that, but Z would just crunch it and probably puke!
