Mom to Ethan, born 4/23/08. Diagnosed with Reflux at about 1 month, started medicating with Zantac, which wasn't helpful for us. At about 2.5 months, we started on Prevacid, twice a day, and that is working much better.
Ethan is breastfed and has a few solids that he is enjoying very much.
giving syringe meds
Ethan has a new trick! He has decided to spit out his Axid when I give it to him in a syringe. I am only giving it when he has a reflux flare, so when I am trying to give it, he really needs it. I thought of trying to just mix it in his foods, but I think to be the most effective, it should be given 30 minutes before eating. I guess, though, that would be more effective than on his shirt lol.

suggestions?

By the way Merry Christmas to you all.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
When Jedd is being fussy I pull up the amount of Axid he needs into the sryinge a 10cc one and then pull up water to fill the rest of the syringe. It waters it down so he can't taste it as well.

The vast majority of the time he will just take it though. But the above is the trick I use. You could always pull up some juice as well to mask the flavor. A little but shouldn't do any damage to the effectivness of the med.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
I will have to let Joslyn talk to ethan about his meds! She takes her zantac so well. She actually gets excited when she sees the syringe. weird I know!

Be good to mommy ethan.... take your meds

I think I'll try your trick Jessica. I'll have to do juice, because he does the same, no swallow trick, with water. I like to think that he is just too smart for his own good ;)

Seamus was diagnosed with Silent Reflux at 3 weeks. Now he is 14 months, on Prilosec and avoiding dairy, soy, egg. Still nursing. A lot !!!
My GI said it is no big deal to mix the meds with a bite or two of pureed pear/other stuff..Any word from other GIs regrading combining meds with an actual ood 30 min before a meal? hmm

when Jos was on prevacid, her gi was not sure if mixing the prevacid with breastmilk would work. It was the solutab prevacid. (The kind that melts)

We always give all of Jedd's GERD meds on an empty stomach at least 30 mins prior to a meal. That's how our GI has todl us to give them. Our Rehabilitation clinic has also set up Jedd's feeding schedule the same way for the same reason.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
axid is fine to be given with food - we put Allie's in her bottle.
