Totally off topic but a medical ?
Some of you know that my uncle is very special to me. Beyond words... My gpa, his dad, died of stomach cancer. My uncle noticed a lump in his abdomen. He went to the dr today and they say it's a hernia. What I'm wondering is: how sure can they be without doing tests? Do I still need to be concerned that it may be cancer or can I be pretty confident in what they said?

He has an appt with a surgeon next Friday.

Thanks for any help y'all might have for me :)

Not sure, but I'll be looking for the responses. I've had stomach distress since Aug. w/throat involvement. No answers so far, but I do have an endoscope scheduled for Jan. 9th. Sometimes I swear I feel a lump (hardness) there in the middle of my upper abdomin. I'm scared to death, but I'm hoping it's something fixable. Ellen

Mom to Jasmine aka: Jazz 01/24/2007
Dx with silent reflux at 8 months
FPIES, DGE, MSPI. Recently diagnosed with EC (Eosin. colitis and now Primary immune deficiency disease.
Also mom to Nathan. born Jan.20th, 2009, MPI . so far dx with reflux and has an extremely sensitibe GI system. Also dx with primary immune deficiency disease.
Most likely it is a hernia...It's pretty easy to tell the difference between the two. Hernias are generally soft, as it is really just misplaced tissues, while tumors are hard. The locations are also a give away. Hernias are generally in 2-3 places in the abdomen (and groin), but tumors are much deeper and more likely to appear anyplace. I'll keep him in mu thoughts though.....

Thanks! I was thinking that I had heard what you said...that tumors don't move around and hernias will move under your hand. :) I feel a little better when y'all confirm what doctors say :)

did he have any sort of invasive tests to confirm a hernia verses a lump of tissue?

No, no tests at all. Just a dr visit. My aunt is in knots. My uncle is a very stubborn, private man. She is afraid he's not telling her something (as we all are). I told her that I don't think that's the case. I believe he's just a little afraid himself.

he is scheduled to see a surgeon next Friday. I told her that surely if the dr thought it was cancer, he'd have tests done before my uncle sees a surgeon.

oh definitely i know, they always like to "test" for cancer, then proceeding with the hernia operation is probably a good sign; although i will pray for him and his family and you none the less!

Thanks Kat! I'm basically his kid :) My aunt & uncle couldn't have kids so they "took in" my sis and me. My oldest sister lived with them for several years. Two more kids came along. They cared for them a lot. Then I came along. I was their "weekend child" for 10 years. I stayed with them from Friday at 530 til Sunday evening, every weekend from the time I was 9 till I was around 19. That's why I say...beyond words. I can definitely say that without them, my life would have been totally screwed! I would be even more messed up than I am, lol. My mom is a wonderful woman and I love her more than life. She just didn't have the resources to care for 4 kids. Needless to say she was a single mom. I always thought my uncle was rich, it was just the simple fact that they had no kids to buy for and he had a good job.
Check with your
doctor first!
