Mommy of Hunter born 07/16/08. Tongue tied at birth, never learned to bf well. Diagnosed with silent reflux at 5 weeks with barrium swallow. Fed on expressed breast milk. Currently on Gaviscon, Omeprizole (prilosec), Domperidone (Motilium)have yet to see medication have any effect on him. His biggest symptom is his distain of feeding time- he hates it. . Hospitalised for two weeks in September, fed through ng tube.
I need your opinion
So, I havent been on in a while. Hunters reflux seems to have gotten considerably better. Hardy any crying during feedings. Hes taking so much and was getting grumpy between feeds Ive started solids which he seems to like. (He took 11oz before bed last night!!) Anyway,Daddy left out his Prosilec (Omeprizole) from the fridge AGAIN. I called the pharmicist and she said its no good anymore and I need a new bottle (even after two doctors told me it would be fine ..who am I to beleive???) The pharmacy cant get any in until after Christmas. So, he will have to go a few days without any My question is : should I just take him off it completely? He just turned 5 months and have been on it for three months. I have never been convinced it ever did him any good as his progress has been very gradual and there was never a time where I thoght to myself "the medicine must have kicked in" I could never tell. Just to add also, we will be moving from the UK to the States in a few months and wont have health insurance so he would have been coming off it then anyway. Please , any advice welcomed, because I actually think you guys are better informed to ask than the stupid GP here that dont know anything about the drug or reflux and all contradict each other anyway. Thanks and sorry its so long winded!

Oh, one more thing... He spits up a bit (just posits) and it has a bit of a acidic smell. It doesnt seem to bother him but shouldnt the Prosilec have taken care of that? Another reason Im not convinced its working.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
In my extremely sleep deprived days I accidently put Jedd's compounded PRilosec in the cupboard in stead of the fridge..OOPPPSSSS We were told to go ahead and use it. It was only overnight.

How is he acting when he does puke????

When Jedd's reflux was under control he coudl jsut open his mouth and puke with barely a fuss, sad isn't it??? He is soo used to puking that as long as he takes enough meds he jsut does it. :-(

For a comparison when he needs to have it upped he will arch and scream during a puke and cry at he top of his lungs, it burns..KWIM??????

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
My GUESS is that the pharm. would tell you that bc #1 liability and #2 they want you to buy another bottle, right :)

As far as taking him off, I wouldn't. I would at least see how he does with the solids for a little while before quitting the meds. If his spit up smells acidic, I'd see about getting a different med or a dosage increase. Maybe when you get to the states, you can find a dr you trust. Hugs!

He doesnt seem to mind puking. Yes, I think I will keep him on it- better safe than sorry!
Check with your
doctor first!
