molly's mom
I was wondering how many of your children have had to have an endoscopy done? My daughter(4.5 months old) is going to have one done. I would like to wait until she is 6 months old, because I have heard the risk of complications drops a lot at that age. Did it tell you a lot of helpful information? Anything I should know before making my final decision?

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
I haven't been through that so I don't guess I can help much. I wanted to ask have they done other tests? What is the reason they feel an endoscopy is necessary?

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site:
Jedd had one done but not until older. He was not allowed to go to the OR until his heart got repaired at 6 months old, so we had to wait or we would have done it sooner.

IMHO a scope is one of the best tests you can have done for reflux. I believe this because:

1-you can see right away if there is any damage

2-you can see if the meds are working properly to keep the acid at bay

3-they take biopses that are tested to see if there is an underlying condition that is mimicing reflux. Like EE or EOS or Celiac's

I'd go through with it, if it were up to me, obviously we did...LOL IF was a great test for Jedd and let know us all fo the above stuff.

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
We had several tests done prior to the scope. They didn't want to do the scope until Adriane was at least a year because of the anathesia and her apnea. That and he wasn't sure that it would show us much until then either. It really depends on what they are looking for as to wether it will be worth doing. Have they done other tests? I think one of the pp asked these same questions. sorry!

maia m - GERD. Nissen Fundoplication w/hiatal hernia repair.
Mom to
Son (10) GERD(aspiration pneumonias, apnea, tracheomalacia), Food allergy, Asthma
Daughter (6) GERD, Heart Murmur, Food Allergy, Asthma, Mold allergy
Both of my children were scoped. It helped rule out more serious issues (like eosinophilic esophagitis, etc.) and verify severe reflux. We found that they had esophageal damage and stomach irritation/inflammation. Mine were 3yr and 7yr, I think. My son did have a bronchoscopy when he was just 3 weeks old... it is so scary when they are tiny.
Check with your
doctor first!
