Carafate-Has anyone tried it?
Has anyone tried carafate to treat their child's reflux? My dr. doesn't like it, but we recently got a second opinion from another gastro, and he reccomends it. We have tried zantac, prevacid, nexium, erythromycin, reglan and gaviscon with no real results. Carafate is one of the few we haven't tried. I'd love to hear what other people who have used it think.

My name is being used fraudently to ill represent me. Please be cautious of any information you receive with my name. including,,, anything from anyone claiming to be Engi Nowaira online. Otherwise, I will be representing myself in person so that everyone will have opportunity to identify me in person.
My previous drivers license was also stolen. The new one has extra security features on it.
I think Carafate has helped a lot for Meggy.

Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!!!!! This is one of the deciding factors for us in switching Emily's GI b/c the med will not be authorized for a refill for her by them.

it is a short term med (8 weeks per time max, according to them) used only in severe cases of reflux or to treat ulcers. there is very low occurrence of side effects. always a good thing to hear right?

what acid reflux meds is your child on? cause just to warn you- you have to take at least 1 hour before OR 1 hour after pretty much ALL medicines. it coats the stomach and esophagus and upper small intestine; think mylanta... times 10

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site:
I would do it as well. It really is like super mylanta like others have said. I would just be careful doseing it out, that timing tha tis. We used to give Jedd his reflux meds at least 1 hour prior to a meal and then do carafate 30 mins prior to each meal.

Mom to Peter - 10 months old with reflux on prevacid and dairy allergy
We used it for a while, but timing it with prevacid and meals became unbearable. We use mylanta just for breakthrough now and it works well.

maia m - GERD. Nissen Fundoplication w/hiatal hernia repair.
Mom to
Son (10) GERD(aspiration pneumonias, apnea, tracheomalacia), Food allergy, Asthma
Daughter (6) GERD, Heart Murmur, Food Allergy, Asthma, Mold allergy
Loved it, but it was short term and yes difficult to time -- between meds and meals and needing empty stomachs, it was a constant struggle, and mine was older (3?) . Really helped, but only a short term fix.

Sharon, Mom to Elyse, 17 mos (15 mos adjusted-preemie). Zantac/Elecare. History of: Respiratory Distress Syndrome with ventilation/CPAP/cannula, tpn, n/g tube, PDA, jaundice, apnea, bradycardia/tachycardia, severe anemia, blood transfusion, reflux, Sandifer's Syndrome, intestinal malrotation, hemangiomas, MSPI, feeding issues. ICU inpatient 53 days! 2 surgeries, 2 UGIs, barium enema, pH probe, endoscopy. Developmentally on target now! PIC: Yobaby Beard
Like peter's mom said...a PAIN to time around prevacid and feedings (and for my dd, 2 other meds at the time!) It honestly did not seem to help Elyse at all, and she was taken off of it after a couple weeks. But try it, some kids have had great results!
