Neocate Problem?
My 10 1/2 month old is on Neocate, has been for quite a long time. We discovered he has milk and soy allergies, so his GI doctor put him on Neocate after a huge bought with diarrhea and hospitalization due to dehydration. He feels a lot better, but his poops have never gone normal. They are still that icky almost diarrhea poops. I know Neocate poops are a different color and horrible smell, but the consistancy is almost the same as when he was on soy formula. Here's my question: The other day my husband ran out to my car and I just happened to look at the can of Neocate as I was starting to look out the window. I noticed the second ingredient is vegetable oil (vegetable oil is soy!) and it even says soy on the label in parentesis. Could this be why his poops aren't normal even after all these months on Neocate? Could this amount of soy be too much for him? If so, are there any truly non-milk and non-soy formulas out there?

Have u tried Elecare? Another elemental formula

There are medical foods out there that can be fortified to be nutritionally complete if there is a doctor and nutritionist willing. They say technically that a child should not react to elemental formulas.

My daughter did however and she never caught a break until we took all milk, soy, corn, vanilla, strawberry, pork, shellfish away from her. She still deals with pain on a daily basis, but she is finally growing and gaining weight.

My daughter had such severe reactions to infant formula, elemental included that we could not wait till she was a year to take her off of them. Elemental was her absolute worst. However, she does have a major sensitivity to corn which is what the biggest % of the elemental is.

We are thankful that we finally took her to Hopkins to get another opinion. She is currently 19 months old and a few months ago we put her on Ultracare for Kids which has been mixed in a recipe that her GI and Nutritionist made specific to her needs.

She has grown since then and has had more good days, but still deals with some pain issues.

Sorry for ranting, just wanted to give a little history so as to let u know where I am coming from.

Anyway, Ultracare for kids is a medical food but is mixed as a drink just like formula. It says not to be used as infant formula however, and carries a Vitamin A overdose warning.

Hmm, Elecare has Soy as well. It's soy oil and a smaller amount, wonder if that would still bother him. I will have to ask his GI doctor.

Mom to Eddie 1/07 and Nicholas 6/08. Eddie allergic and refluxer now on cow's milk!!!! Nicholas also a refluxer on prevacid and breast milk. Mom on elimination diet AGAIN!!
the way the gi explained is that most are only allergic to the protein not the fat therefor the oil should be ok. But i have heard of lo that can't have peanut oil so i am not sure how that works. As far as the pops my eldest was on Necate until he was about 16 months tthe poops were always that nasty green, just oncw I started solids they got harder. (sorry o graphic) If you go on the Neocate website it explains why the poops are this color on the FAQ section HTH E

Oh, I expect them to be the green funky color and odd smell. It's the nasty consistancy that is of concern for us.

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
It is possible that he is not tolerating it. My dd did neocate for months and got worse gradually. Now she can't tolerate it at all. She was switched to a new formula that has to be mixed and it if it isn't just right she is sick. You need to talk to the GI and see if they have any other options for your lo.

My son was allergic to neocate, it does occasionally happen, but it isnt common. He is doing better on Elecare. Another diference, is that neocate also contains coconut oil, and elecare does not.
