Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
Could prune possibly aggravate reflux?
My poor little Matthew was constipated and didn't go for 3 days. Now we knew it was the carrot that caused it because Aidan, his twin brother, was also constipated on the same food. I increased the amount of prune in his solid to half of the 2.5oz pack/per day. So I gave him about 1/4 of the pack (I bought the Gerber prune pack and add it to the homemade solid) 2 times a day. He pooped well on it but starting last night he threw up and then again 2 times today. He's on Prilosec and the reflux has been under control till now. I couldn't think of anything else changed in his diet except the prune. May be I gave him too much that it aggravated the reflux? Do you have any idea? How much prune do you give your little one to treat constipation? And if you have any tips on relieving constipation it would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Prunes have a pretty low pH. They're acidic. It seems like all kids have different triggers and this could be one for him.

There are meds that many moms here use for constipation but I don't have any experience with them. Hopefully one of them will come along. I used mineral oil with Mags once but you need to ask your ped first.

Mom to Ethan, born 4/23/08. Diagnosed with Reflux at about 1 month, started medicating with Zantac, which wasn't helpful for us. At about 2.5 months, we started on Prevacid, twice a day, and that is working much better.
Ethan is breastfed and has a few solids that he is enjoying very much.
Prunes caused terrible reflux for Ethan. Pear juice works to a certain extent, and I seem to see a correlation betweeen Ethan eating homeade squash puree and reduced constipation. I cook butternut and acorn squash and give him twice the butternut squash. This could be a coincidence, but it seems to work, and I don't see any reflux symptoms with it.
I've also done suppositories and Mylanta liquid, if diet changes didn't work.

I can't believe I didnt' think of this yesterday...Papaya babyfood worked for Mags to keep her regular. It's supposed to soothe the stomach too. Our grocery store sells fresh papaya if you think he'd rather have the real stuff. It's very soft so he could eat it as a finger food.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
We used (and still use) prunes with constipation, though without reflux issues. Apple juice (and pear juice) are good for contipation, though not applesauce - the apple itself has pectin in it. We've used suppositories and stool softeners with the ped's permission.

On a side note, constipation ITSELF triggers worse reflux sx, so it may not have been the prunes, but the constipation by itself. Maybe watch for signs of constipation before it gets bad, and try prunes then, and see what happens.

mom to Mila 2-20-2007
and Robby 4-22-2004
Mila is on Peptamen JR 30 cal by NG tube. Open Heart Surgery 2/08/08. Captopril, Zantac, Losec, Lasix.
While prunes are on the acidic side, i'd be more likely to believe the constipation was the cause of the reflux flare. Hope he's better in a flash.

I reduced the amount of prunes to 1 tsp ( 2 times/day) and also gave him 1 tsp of Milk of Magnesia per GI nurse's recommendation. He's doing fine so far today. On the past 2 days with the flare-up, he pooped well once a day. So it could be due to too much prunes I gave him. Papaya sounds great! It works for me like a charm. I'll definitely try it on Matthew and Aidan. Squash was their favorite food before but for some reason I forgot all about it recently. I'll try squash again and add more juice/water in him. The GI nurse said that daily use of Milk of Magnesia is ok, esp. with just 1 tsp. I'm a bit concern that it might cause dependency? I also use suppositories occasionally when he has bad constipation. Has anyone used Milk of Magnesia on a daily basis? Thanks so much for your quick input and advice.

Seamus was diagnosed with Silent Reflux at 3 weeks. Now he is 14 months, on Prilosec and avoiding dairy, soy, egg. Still nursing. A lot !!!
Prunes make Seamus get cramps in his belly. For his constipation I give him lots of fluids, do a warm bath followed by a belly massage( in a clockwise direction because that is the path of elimination)..and then "Babylax" if necessary..a glycerine based laxative that gets the job done. Good luck! Let us know what works out for you!

Thank you for your advice!
Matthew is doing better and poops daily now. The papaya helps a lot and he loves it. I hope we can wean him down from Milk of Magnesia (3ml/a day) when thing settles down.
