OK, Now What?
The GI put my 10 month old on Periactin. He wasn't eating and it was getting bad (3oz/day bad). She said it would stimulate his hunger. Great. We started last night. Today I noticed an increase in his hunger. Problem is, he won't stop sleeping. So, instead of eating, he's sleeping. He slept from 11:30 to 2pm today (I had to wake him up to go pick up my 3 year old), then he came home, griped, griped, griped, refused to eat (what!) and just went to bed at 5:30pm (waking at 2 he normally wouldn't go back down until 9pm). Now, I am enjoying all the sleep (because he's not a big sleeper), but if he's sleeping, how in the world am I supposed to get him to eat? And if I don't give him the medication, he won't eat. See the problem? And I only gave him his morning dose. He's not had his second dose at all. This is just off half his daily meds.

Hit send too soon. My question is, what would you suggest? Stop the med and see what happens? Keep giving him the med and hope this goes away before he gets dehydrated? My pediatrician (not the doctor that prescribed the Periactin) is open tomorrow, so I do have options there. Sigh. Help?

My only thought is that maybe it will take his body a bit to adjust and then the fatigue will go away. Other than that I have no idea. That is a dilemma tho! HUGS

TWINS:
Ella 5/3/05 GERD, asthma, hypotonia, food intolerances, esophagitis, IBS //
Ava 5/3/05 asthma, food allergies
Pic: My girls! They are getting so big!
We had that problem with a med they gave Ella but she got used to it after a few days and was fine. Did they give you any idea how long this side effect would last? I might call the pedi and see what they think.

Is there any way to taper onto the medicine... like maybe by starting him with the meds at night and then hopefully he will eat and be alert in the am??? Then when he gets used to it you could up the dose.

Honestly I don't know a ton about that specific med this is just a thought. I can imagine you are very frustrated!! big ((HUGS)). Hopefully the pedi can give you some good suggestions tomorrow (??). Let us know how things go!

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Periactin can be trikcy to do....just to let you know. Jedd's GI has avoided it for us so far, but as you knwo we have/had the tube to help.

I would think that the side affects would lessen in a couple of days, I'd wait a day or tow, through the weekend and see what happens.

YOu also have to rotate on and off of the Periactin or it will not work. Most kids do 3 weeks on and 1 week off. Then continue with the rotation.

My previous drivers license was also stolen. The new one has extra security features on it.
My mother in law suggested we fry onions and cook chicken broth to stimulate Meggy's appetite. It actually seemed to turn Megan off but normally should stimulate the appetite.

Thanks ladies. Hey, great timing on the onion/chicken thing. We are having those tonight! Hehe. Can't hurt to try. I decided to give him less meds today. He slept from 5:30pm - 8am (very, very unlike him) and woke up not really wanting to eat. So, I gave him the meds when he just kept refusing food. I gave him about half of a dose, hoping to make him hungry but not exhausted. He ate a bit and is now in bed, not sure that worked at all. We will see.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Did you ever dreamfeed? It may be worth a shot to see if he'll latch while sleeping....good luck!!!

Tried it, he spits it out just like with regular feeds. Sigh. I am currently waiting for the GI on call to call me back as he now has a rash all over his torso.
Check with your
doctor first!
