comfort feeding?
does comfort feeding apply to solid food? i have noticed that i can tell emily is refluxing, she says her throat is hot and she asks for food and eats it- even after a meal. When she was a baby she used to comfort feed at the breast and we a very big baby until she was 4 months old and stopped eating. but i never read anywhere that it applied to solid/table foods. does anyone know?

Seamus was diagnosed with Silent Reflux at 3 weeks. Now he is 14 months, on Prilosec and avoiding dairy, soy, egg. Still nursing. A lot !!!
Interesting..I haven't heard of comfort feeding on solids but it makes ense that it could help sooth the burn..if it was something soft or slimy..Seamus comfort feeds on my breast all the time but he is way picky about solids.

When my acid reflux flares up I try to find something to eat to soothe it (if I don't have tums handy) so I can see why Emily would. It makes sense to me.

I think Ella does that. I am just guessing though. I do know from my own issues with ulcers and gastritis that the burning sometimes feels like a hunger pang. I can tell that Ella will do that when she is refluxing. She will cry "Mommy I'm sooo hungry" when I know very well that she just ate. I assume it is the burning feeling. Sometimes if I give her medicine she isn't "hungry" anymore.

Supposedly comfort feeding is more rare than kids who just flat refuse to eat but I really think it is going on at my house. ;)

Mom to Jasmine aka: Jazz 01/24/2007
Dx with silent reflux at 8 months
FPIES, DGE, MSPI. Recently diagnosed with EC (Eosin. colitis and now Primary immune deficiency disease.
Also mom to Nathan. born Jan.20th, 2009, MPI . so far dx with reflux and has an extremely sensitibe GI system. Also dx with primary immune deficiency disease.
Actually, I was wodering the same thing myself....Jazz used to refuse foods at about the same time Emily did...4 months, but now she tanks down sometimes 14oz at a time when I know she's probably Refluxing. She NEVER drinks that much or asks to eat more. Very likely I would say. I'm glad you brought it up....

We just did this today... Ella ate 1/2 an apple and then about 45 min later came in SCREAMING that she was SOOOO hungry. I went ahead and gave her meds for acid and then she was fine. Very interesting.

my son is almost 5 months old and his GI dr seems to think that is what he is doing as well. He takes a whole 8oz bottle and a whole jar of baby food every 4-5 hours even through the night. he is not over weight from eating so much bc he spits up ozs of it. if you try to stop him b4 he is done he screams. I am actually waiting for the dr to call me back right now!!
