DS #1 (7/05) - Just ReDX'd Refluxer! Prevacid Solutab starting 4/8/09. Lots of food and environmental allergies. Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, Speech Delays, Developmental Delays, Severe Muscle Tone Weakness.
DS #2 (1/08) ReDX'd refluxer. Milk and soy allergies with Soy Lecithin allergies. Oat milk drinker, Rice protein powder, DHA, and vitamins added for bulk and needed nutrition. Weak muscle tone, slightly developmentally delayed, SPD confirmed.
Not Eating - Not Sick?
My son (9 months old) is now not eating. He has had about 2 bottles today, total (if that). He doesn't have a fever, nothing seems to be hurting him, his ears don't seem to be bothering him. He's cranky, but he has been cranky since birth, so it's possible that it's normal for him or something else. But this is days 3 of this odd eating. Any ideas?

Oh yeah, he's pretty much formula only because he hates solids. He eats a few, but not enough to lower his formula count on any given day and he's pretty much stopped solids as well. He's on Neocate, thickened with Simply Thick. Also, over the past few weeks he has developed eczema all over his face. ALL OVER. It's even behind his ears.

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
emily has this same thing, it's been going on for about 4 days, she finally ate something tonight. she has a weird rash on her face too its not eczema but a flat red rash on her cheeks and chin. I called the Pedi and they told me that something has been going around, kind of a weird stomach bug where kids just stop eating for 3-5 days, no other symptoms.

Mom to Ethan, born 4/23/08. Diagnosed with Reflux at about 1 month, started medicating with Zantac, which wasn't helpful for us. At about 2.5 months, we started on Prevacid, twice a day, and that is working much better.
Ethan is breastfed and has a few solids that he is enjoying very much.
grasping at straws here. . . I know that babies who breastfeed often have a nursing strike at 9 months. I'm not sure if they increase their intake of other foods during that time or are just very light eaters for a few days then. Maybe that could be it?

Of course that doesn't account for the eczema.

Hmm, this is definitely eczema. It looks just like DS #1's eczema (but is much more wide-spread). It was here before the not eating, much before. So I am not sure they are together. They might be. I just can't figure out what he would be allergic to that would cause such extreme eczema. Nothing has changed in his environment, nothing. He's almost formula only. And the handful of things he will snack on have never changed and aren't enough to keep this amount of eczema going and in such a dire amount. The not eating though is so weird. This child was eating eight 8oz bottles each day, easily. Now, nothing. Yesterday he had one bottle total. Odd.

oh just found out today, emily's rash is from her skin being sensitive and it being cold out ... cold for florida at least haha nothing to do with her not eating. If you don't think the eating strike is from a tummy bug like what's goin around here, do you think maybe he could just want something different? sippie cup or to try food (i know you said he hates food) but maybe try in a diff way then offered before??

2 healthy daughters (knock wood) Cory (16), Kim (11) & Eric (4) diagnosed with e.e. (scoped 8/08), GERD & severe food/seasonal allergies, asthma. Cried non-stop first 17 mths. of life Found out he is allergic to cow's milk, soy, eggs, and peanuts. Takes Prevacid, Neocate One Plus & Flovent.
Check the Simply Thick. It may contain milk or soy, which could be a problem if he is allergic/intolerant. Also, carefully look over the solid foods he does take for suspicious ingrediants - egg, milk, soy, etc. Keep in mind that there are many names for milk (whey, etc.) & the same goes for the others. I was shocked to see things like fish oil & eggs in even Stage 2 baby food. Ellen

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
If nothing new has been added to the diet that you can account for then it sounds to me like an environmental allergy of some kind. Is there ANYTHING new going on..detergent, clothing, dog, cat, anything?? It's a shot in the dark, but something is making your kid react...we are going through the same thing right now...no new foods, but flared excema...it's true this time of year makes it worse...sodry. Slather him in Cetaphil and see if he feels a lil better.

I read Simply Thick's ingredients and they are very simple and totally GFCF (my older son is gluten and casein free, so that's important in our home). Neocate is dairy free. The foods he eats are dairy free totally (casein free) due to my older son's dietary needs. His mainstay of things have been fresh foods and those are gone. He's not eating any solids, period. He has never eaten baby food. His sensory issues keep him from doing that. Sigh. I guess I should take him in to see the doctor.

Yeah, we started the basic eczema routine (since DS #1 has it, we know it well). I am concerned this is the Neocate. It's the newest thing we have added to his diet and it's the only thing he has ever had consistantly that would be enough to be causing so much eczema. I pray it's not that. I went ahead and put a call into his GI doctor. I figured it couldn't hurt. His pediatrician's office had to close unexpectedly (their entire building is shut down without notice due to some construction suddenly needing every bit of power and such off). So I can't call his ped. I am waiting for a call back on what she wants us to do.

His GI doctor called me back and she's concerned about pain with reflux. So she put him on Carafate today (2ml's 3x/day). We will see how that works. As for the eczema, she's baffled on that as well. She said it's very, very unlikely that he would be allergic to the Neocate (though not impossible as you can be allergic to anything). So, we are going back to formula only. We will do that until we see a change (good or bad) and then take it from there.
