Salmonella
So Zack was in the hospital for what we thought was the flu (vomiting, diahrreah, etc)...he got IV fluids for two days and was fine adn came home...then we went to Mexico. Apparently, unbeknownst to me, they tested him for Salmonella. The result came back positive on the 9th...no one called me. Public health came to my house on the 13th (I was out of town), I returned the call on Friday, she was gone for the day...Zack was at daycare on Monday and Tues. When the nurse finally called me back and told me what it was about I replied...YOU MIGHT WANT TO THROW THE PARENT A BONE AND TELL THEM WHAT IT IS SO I COULD KEEP MY KID HOME AND NOT SPREAD IT!!! Obviously the govt is not that concerned with spreading it! Anyway, Zack cannot go to daycare until he gets two consecutive negative stool samples...They are convinced he is patient Zero and do not beleive me that he doesn't eat. I told them to call his GI to confirm, he eat nothing but lactose free formula and salmonella comes from eggs, milk and meat! He must have gotten it from some other kids poop at daycare...so whoever didn't wash their hands....THANK YOU for costing me 30, 000 in hospital bills and my kid's pain and suffering. Seriously...you couldnt' take that extra 15 seconds?? Ugh...anyway, this is a PSA...PLEASE WASH YOUR HANDS PEOPLE! *stepping off my soapbox now* :) Like I can take more days off work?? Hopefully this will all get resolved quickly, os Z can go back asap...ugh!

That's what happened to Quinn when she was 13months old. she went into the hospital just for a FTT work up. She was having diarrhea, which wasn't uncommon for her anyways and they said she tested positive for salmonella. I think the testing might be inaccurate because that wasn't the cause for her diarrhea. at least not the persistence of it for months and months on end after that hospitalization. I got a call from the public health about it and they seemed to think it came from me or my sister not washing our hands after handling raw meat. I think it was bogus because i was pretty careful with her. especially knowing how fragile her health was. It could have been from anything. *shrug*. i'm glad that he is better now. -Sarah

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Oh wow! I need to post this on the wall at Mom's Morning Out!!! then I can point to it when I get looks for washing my hands so much.

YOU CAN NOT WASH YOUR HANDS TOO MUCH WHEN YOU'RE TAKING CARE OF CHILDREN!

I'm sorry that you're dealing with this..so sorry. So is there a discussion with the daycare center in the near future? I don't know what I'd do in this situation. I'd want to rip somebody's head off, but how would I know who to do it to? I guess the director is a good scape goat ;-) She's in charge after all, lol.

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
OMG!!! Poor fella!!! Poor MOMMA!!! Someone dropped the ball at his school... for sure!!!! Call the director and tell her/him. I was a director for an after school program and you need to tell her that your son got it from somewhere.... since he does not eat that kinda stuff. It may have came from a store or school. P.H. may have already contacted the school.

Poor buddy!

mom2adriane&morgan
Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
That is so strange because we had a parent call this morning stating that their son is being tested for Salmonella. She asked if we had any other reports of salmonella. I told her no becuase we haven't but we have had so many kids out with stomach bugs. It made me curious. I just wonder how many of those kids are out with it and don't know it yet. And these are middle school aged kids!

I'm sorry you are having to deal with all of this. I hope that he continues to stay well and I hope that this changes the hand washing practices at his daycare.

oh my!!! salmonella? eek! See, I'm with you on this one. I wash my hands like a maniac....that's why I was SO frustrated when the dang pinkeye wouldn't go away. I cannot believe he was in the hospital for salmonella!!! It *could* be picked up from anywhere, but I'd probably blame the daycare too. I'm having "issues" at the moment with people being paid $30 a day to wipe my child's butt and STILL not doing it!!!! I mean, seriously....hand washing and *good* butt wiping should be MANDATORY!!!!! I'm so sorry :(
