Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
18 month appt Tachycardia (sp?) - OT
Adriane had her 18 month appointment today. Her ear infection was gone. She said her ears looked perfect. Thank Goodness. Her lungs were okay but her nose was still cruddy. She listened to her heart. I asked her if her heart rate was still elevated and she said it was. She could also hear a murmur that she did have last year when they did her EKG. So, she put a pulse ox on her, we just disconnected her pulse ox at night about 2 months ago, here we go again. Her sat. level was good at 97-98%. Her resting hr was 115. Which is pretty high for a child her age. It has been high since for at least a month or so. I guess everytime we have gone in she noted that on her chart.

So, back to x-ray! We had to do another chest x-ray. I hate those contraptions! She screamed and we just thought her heart rate was high before. Anyway, I thought she was looking to make sure she didn't have early signs of pneumonia. I'm still not sure she wasn't. No signs of that and no signs of an enlarged heart. I know that some meds can increase your heart rate but for how long and what happens if they can't get it to come down? The probelm is that she was concerned that she now has a heart murmer and the increased heart rate. Plus, if it doesn't come down won't the heart start to enlarge? Just curious. I can't start worrying now. We don't go back until after Thanksgiving unless something changes.

I am sorry for your bad news. I hope that the elevated HR won't cause the heart to enlarge. Meggy's stays about 115-120 while she is sleeping these days. I have brought it up to the docs. more than once.

Has she had a holter monitor yet. Meggy did the extended Holter for 30 back in Feb. and it did show tachycardia and bradycardia clusters. They think it is pain related.

I hope that she will outgrow this and there will be no permanent effects.

We have only done the EKG last year. When the docs finally saw the blue/purple spells at their worst. I don't know anything about the hotler monitor. She used to wear a pulse ox and apnea machine and she bradied all the time. She hardly ever had tachy problems. That is why this is so weird. She has been so pale lately and taking extra long or additional naps. Do you think that could be an additional symptom? Even the babysitter noticed that she has had to wake her from her naps and that usually doesn't happen.

She used to take one nap of about an hour or so and then if she was really tired she might take another on the weekends. Not normally on the week days. Lately she has been taking a morning nap and those have lasted anywhere from 1.5 hours or up to 3 hours. Then sometimes she will take an additional nap in the late afternoon or just go to bed super early. Tonight she went to bed around 5:30 AM and is still sleeping. Other than the occasional wheezing attack. -Amanda

Sorry you have something new to *not* worry about. Cooper has had boughts of tachycardia due to the reflux, but never a constant. I though have always had an elevated pulse and have a heart murmur, and it has never been anything more than that. My pulse is always over 100. Hugs!

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
A holter monitor can be worn for 24 hours or more and it will record some vitals as the child goes about their business. I had a K-5 student once who had one done. She did one every year. I can't remeber why though...it's bee a LONG time.

Sorry you have something else to worry about...(((HGUS)))

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
Lorenzo has a resting heart rate between 110 and 120 and his cardiologist says it isn't anything to worry about, though we see the cardiologist every 6 months and do a 24 hour Holter monitor each time. His opinion is that it takes many years of slightly elevated heart rates to really put a strain on the heart. His episodes of tachycardia and brachycardia are all believed to be related to reflux and obstructive sleep apnea, which is believed to be caused by the reflux. When he has a cold, his HR is typically between 120-160. Has Adrianne had a sleep study done recently? If not, I would talk to the pedi about it, and I would also ask about a consult with a pediatric cardiologist if that's an option. Also, Lorenzo and I both have heart murmurs that are only heard intermittently and i was told that that, too, is not of any particular concern -- just something to keep tabs on. I hope you get some clarity about all of it -- it is so nerve wracking to know something isn't quite right, but not be able to identify how serious it is, or what exactly is causing it.

You ladies are great! Thanks for all the insight. I don't think her ped would be concerned if it wasn't for the fact that her normal is lower. We saw a ped cardio last year, around Feb., they told us that everything was normal. No heart murmer, no high resting hr.

She hasn't had a sleep study done in a while. I think she had one done at her last ph probe, endo back in June. I am so sleepy, I don't know what is correct right now. Anyway, all of you have helped me put my worries to bed even if just for the night. Thanks! -Amanda

Mom to a 3 year old baby girl with severe reflux: g-tube, nissen fundoplication. dx: RAD, failure to thrive, DGE, epilepsy, sleep apnea, paraesohphogeal hernia, high lactic acid there's more "unknown disease"... Hospitalized 12 times, PT graduate! ST graduate! OT graduate! Current Meds: singulair, zopeonex, pulmicort, reglan, Keppra, Trileptal, vitamin B6, Veramyst. Current weight: 34 lb. Current height: 39". g-tube dependent, oxygen 1-2LpM all day and night PIC: Ms. Quinn

Quinn has tachycardia. she also has bradycardia. When she is sleeping, her HR can go as low as 30-40bpm. And if she so much as moves a finger, her HR will shoot up to 160 or more. it is quite strange. She also has an "innocent" murmur. She hasn't worn a halter but she has had plenty of EKGs and echos. They can't find anything of significance. The only thing she had was some holes in her heart as a newborn, but those were closed at 10 months old. I think you are ok with taking the doctor's approach on this one, to sit back and see if anything comes of it. try not to worry yourself about something that might not be something to worry about. I'm glad her ears were clean.
Check with your
doctor first!
