OT-advice on hives
Hey girls, I know I mentioned before about having hives of pregnancy that never went away. Anyway, I was prescribed reactine to be taken daily. I stopped taking it a couple months ago, and have only had a minor breakout here and there, which reactine has usually taken care of. We never found a cause, some routine bloodwork for liver and thyroid came back fine. But now, I am sick with the cold, and am having the worst break out ever. I have hives on my palms, but my feet are almost completely covered. Some of the hives are bigger than silver dollars. Reactine is not working, so I opted for benedryl, which makes me really drowsy, but I need relief. The benedryl is not working either!!!! I'm guessing that since I am sick, that the hives have to do with immunology or something systemic. I'm tempted to go down to Outpatients if they are not gone by tonight, because I am in agony. Would they be able to do anything anyway, if the antihistamines aren't working? Most of you know my work situation, I can't take time off to go back to my doctor about this right now. Any tips or advice on dealing with this? I can barely walk.

I know this is really nasty, but to give you an idea of what I'm dealing with....they are also on the soles of my feet. Is it safe to double up on benedryl?

Mom to Ethan, born 4/23/08. Diagnosed with Reflux at about 1 month, started medicating with Zantac, which wasn't helpful for us. At about 2.5 months, we started on Prevacid, twice a day, and that is working much better.
Ethan is breastfed and has a few solids that he is enjoying very much.
I too have suffered with hives off and on, and been tested for various things. I don't think it is safe to double up on Benadryl, but the doctor once prescribed me a cream that helped with the itching (can't remember the name). I also used the dye-free benadryl, but I have an allergy to red food dye. You might try that one, in case you have something like that going on. They also sell benadryl creams and sprays, but I know the spray is sticky, so I didn't like to use it.

Also, I know that a warm bath or shower always made mine worse for a couple of hours, so I wouldn't try to get relief that way.

Not much help, but I hope you feel better.

Could you try OTC zyrtec? You can take that with the benedryl. That is what my older ds did this week and it went away fast. Just a suggestion.

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
With Maggie's hives that one time, benadryl didn't work but the hydroxyz hcl (that another mom posted about) worked great. It's a rx antihistamine.

Thanks! I'm going down to the hospital tomorrow for a different rx. I'll mention the hydroxyz hcl. My doctor prescribed the reactine so I wouldn't have to pay by buying it OTC, but it stopped working. I need something I can take everyday that works. From what I've read, chronic hives can last for years. Anyway, I've had 4 doses of benedryl today, and there's been no change. I actually have more on my palms now. It's BRUTAL! Meredith, is the cream you are talking about called PUPP cream? I've been using that as well, with no effect, not even any itch relief, which is weird. I think my system is crashing, lol.

Mom to Ian, 3/1/07
Used Zantac - 1.0 ml twice a day
Weaned at 1 year
Back on Zantac at 15 months
Oh! I have only had them once and they are awful...I went to urgent care twice and got steroid treatments both times and that didn't work! I finally made my doc refer me to an allergist. He put me on three things. I think it was prescription Zyrtec, Claratin, and Benadryl. It cleared up that day.
Check with your
doctor first!
