Mom to Ethan, born 4/23/08. Diagnosed with Reflux at about 1 month, started medicating with Zantac, which wasn't helpful for us. At about 2.5 months, we started on Prevacid, twice a day, and that is working much better.
Ethan is breastfed and has a few solids that he is enjoying very much.
Colic Calm
I saw in the "negatives to zantac" post earlier that Colic Calm was mentioned. We tried it in between Zantac and Prevacid. It wasn't a great cure all for us, but it did appear to help for a day or two. After that, we were using the daily max dose, and not seeing the greatest results. Also at that dosage, it started to mess with his poop, causing less frequent bowel movements, which made me worry, considering that he was breastfed and super young at that point, so he should have been having several per day.

We did read alot of reviews before trying it, and it is well reviewed on their website, as well as on independent websites, so some people have had success with it.

I do have a bottle, unopened, if someone is interested in trying it. Do read their website, because some of the ingredients cause black poop, and the stuff is black and staining. If you didn't know that prior to giving it, that'd be scary!

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
We never used this particular brand but we used a form of gripe water that several of my friends swear by. Unfortunately, it made her better for a couple of days and then 10 times worse. Looking back now I wonder if her allergies played a role in it. I think for some children it might work fine but if you have any allergies in the fam or a sensitive GI it might not be worth it. JMHO! -Amanda

Hi, I am a new mom and my son Weston was just diagnosed with GERD. We have had symptoms since he was a week old and he was just labeled as colicky. After 3 months and the symptoms were worse and more frequent we tried Colic Calm. It worked the first time and then after that, it didn't do anything but made me do more laundry because of the black stains and made him worse because of the poop factor. It made his poop really wierd, so I stopped it. About a week ago I took him to the Dr. again and that is when the doc said he had GERD. She gave us Zantac. We tried that twice which made my 3 mo. old's symptoms 100 times worse, like projectile vomiting atleast 20 times. When he started vomiting blood, we took him to the ER. Nothing was done at the ER other than a stomach xray and we were sent home with no answers. So, we tried Baby's Bliss Gripe water, an all natural remedy. That helped the first few times, but now is not helping AT ALL! He won't sleep longer than an hour and wakes up SCREAMING!! I need help. I can't do anything. I can't clean, I can't take a shower, I can't cook! I am a wreck! Am I just supposed to live like this!?!?! I am thinking we should try Prevacid but am scared that his will do bad things as he is so young to be on meds. Weston is breasfed and seriously wants to eat every hour! I really really need help. I am losing it!

Like you, we didn't see anything but short term relief until we started on Prevacid, twice daily.

I'm sure that you have probably read this on here, but with breastfeeding, when other things aren't working, it could be an intollerance to something in your milk, the most likely culprit being milk products. Once I eliminated milk products from my diet, we were in a much better place.

I think that we started Ethan on Prevacid at around 3 months old, and so far haven't noticed any problems, though all kids are different. I'd talk with my pediatrician, and see if they could sample some prevacid. Perhaps if that gives some relief, you can then look at other things, like diet. I know that was what worked for us, since I wasn't really willing to change my diet, when I couldn't get a shower on many days!

Please know that you can come here for support as much as needed.
