Our 1 year old daughter has silent reflux, hypotonia as well as benign external hydrocephalus. We are currently weaning onto whole milk (we'll see if it works) and she is also on Prevacid 15mg per day.
Ot/ EEG anyone?
Has anyone's little one had to have an EEG done? Where they test for seizures and such? Keira sometimes zones out to where she doesn't respond to me talking and she doesn't look at anything- just a blank stare. BUT it's only happened maybe three or four times in her lifetime that I've seen. The issue is they want her to only have FIVE hours of sleep the night before. Now exactley how do you keep a baby awake until midnight and then wake them up again at five w/ out them somehow even in the car falling asleep? Why do they have to do that?!? Ok done venting...

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
We have had several EEGs and I will tell you that the best dx on any of them have been through longterm EEG. Adriane's first seizures were exactly like you describe only longer. She just checks out. The short EEG that they do outpatient showed nothing abnormal. The reason for the sleep deprivation is because the body is more susceptible to seizures when it is fatigued or sick or under some stress. You will need someone to go with you, more than likely. It isn't an easy process and A was younger than your lo. It took one to distract her and the other to help the tech. I might have been able to do it alone but it takes longer to attach the probes, or whatever they are called, and to take them off than the actual test itself. Our neurologist did another EEG when A was in the hospital for 3 weeks with pneumonia last winter. That was mainly because she had gran mal seizures when she was sick.

Then he ordered another one to be done at our home. A tech comes and set everything up. This one was much easier and much more informative. She could do what she normally does and if i noticed a seizure or seizure like activity I would push the red button. She had a backpack on that carried on the stuff that recorded everything for us. I stayed home with her for 3 days and then they came and took it off on the weekend.

There really is no way to keep them from falling asleep in the car. Adriane did. We did keep her up and then woke her up but we had an hour drive to the hospital. You do the best you can and see what happens. If they don't catch anything keep an eye on her. If it continues to happen then I would talk about a longterm or in-home EEG. Sorry so long! -Amanda

Yeah sometimes she'll just zone out and it's like "Keira? KEIRA?" And then she'll look at you and act like nothing happened. Then last week she was in her carseat in the car and she was sucking her thumb and I looked back and called to her and she just had this total blank stare. I called her name like three times and nothing. I about stopped the car as I was sorta freaked out and before I did that I said really loudly HEY!!! Then she just got startled and looked at me like "what?" So I don't know if it's a seizure or just that she's overstimulated and such. The thing is though that this happens very infrequently and so I just don't know if it's worth getting the EEG yet or not. I kinda just want to see what all these other tests she's having come out to show before doing this but I don't want the doctor to think I'm nuts either. UGH!

baby quinn's mommy
Mom to a 3 year old baby girl with severe reflux: g-tube, nissen fundoplication. dx: RAD, failure to thrive, DGE, epilepsy, sleep apnea, paraesohphogeal hernia, high lactic acid there's more "unknown disease"... Hospitalized 12 times, PT graduate! ST graduate! OT graduate! Current Meds: singulair, zopeonex, pulmicort, reglan, Keppra, Trileptal, vitamin B6, Veramyst. Current weight: 34 lb. Current height: 39". g-tube dependent, oxygen 1-2LpM all day and night PIC: Ms. Quinn
Quinn's seizures started off as staring episodes. She has had many EEGs. One of them being an 8 hour EEG and none showed seizures. One did show some abnormalities. But Quinn has full blown convulsive seizures now. Before, when they were just staring episodes, we just video taped it for the neurologist and she said they were def. seizuers so she was put on the Keppra almost a year ago. -Sarah

Donnie had his first EEG when he was a year old for seizures and he just recently had another EEG in July for an eye tic he developed to rule out seizure activity causing that. The first EEG we didn't have to do the sleep deprived thing but we did this time and it was especially difficult. We did just like you mentioned and kept him up until midnight and then woke him up at 5:00. We had an hour and a half drive to the hospital and he did fall asleep but there was nothing I could do to prevent that. Anyway, they did the test and they wanted him awake for the first part and asleep for the last and he just would not go to sleep. They told us we were going to have to reschedule and do it again if they didn't get any sleep in the study and I just prayed and prayed and he finally went to sleep the last 10 mins. They also did the strobe. So that is our experience. Hope everything goes well! -Liz

That's the thing wouldn't matter how sleep deprived Keira is she won't even sleep at a friend's house much less a doctor's office so.... The ONLY place she'll sleep is her crib. She won't even sleep in OUR bed! This is one picky little woman! LOL.
Check with your
doctor first!
