Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
My (GI) problem girls :)
Audrey finally had her first GI appt. today. Dr. I. put her on milk of magnesia, he said it could be any number of things, but if the m.o.m. dosen't work in 48 hours, we will go from there with a barium enema x-ray (ouch!) She is 12.8 lbs and 26inches tall he said her belly was full of poop. She hasn't pooed in 3 days and he said no more suppository and poor thing is miserable! I sure hope this mom works soon! He suggested Heirsprung's (sp?) but didn't go into detail, he said he hopes to rule that out.

Emily on the other hand has earned herself a free pass to a upper and lower scope. He said if the carafate is working she more then likely has an ulcer; which she shouldn't be getting on prevacid but he dosen't know, he dosen't know if the mucus and blood are related to the problem the carafate is seeming to help.

All i know the past week emily has been on carafate has been the best week in months. She is not throwing tantrums, she is not crying all the time and she is sleeping better, she is even talking now too! I mean actually saying words and 2 word sentences- out of nowhere! "baby sad, oh no-stop, please help, (medi)cine yum, chicken!" all kinds of stuff! she also tells me a cow says "moo' and frog says "reebeet' and thunder goes "boom, boom boom!' lol i would give anything to keep her this happy all the time, anyway thanks for reading, i hope you all are doing well :)

Kat, Elyse was checked for Hirshprungs too, in fact that was the first thing they looked for. usually kids who have it did not poop in their first 24 hrs of life (which was the case for Elyse). It is a scary dx for parents because it means 2 surgeries and a lot of care in between. Also, the barium enema is freakin hard to watch, but the nurses told me that the babies don't mind it that much. The freaky part is that they strap them into this cradle thing and she looked like she was on a rotisserie! They rolled her over just like a rotisserie. They said the babies don't mind that part because it feels like being swaddled. The nice thing was that she was able to poo afterwards and got out barium that had been in there for a week! I hope you get your answers soon. I know firsthand how awful it is to give them the suppositories all the time and how even more awful it is to watch them suffer because they just can't poo!

Meridith
Mom to Ethan, born 4/23/08. Diagnosed with Reflux at about 1 month, started medicating with Zantac, which wasn't helpful for us. At about 2.5 months, we started on Prevacid, twice a day, and that is working much better.
Ethan is breastfed and has a few solids that he is enjoying very much.
I'm glad Emily is feeling better. Hopefully the scopes will help her to feel happy all the time. :) Here's hoping that Audrey poo's soon.

Pictured: G'mom w/3 kids. I'm mom to 1 angel Melissa (dec'd 11/92 - hypoplastic left-heart syn.)
2 healthy daughters (knock wood) Cory (16), Kim (11) & Eric (4) diagnosed with e.e. (scoped 8/08), GERD & severe food/seasonal allergies, asthma. Cried non-stop first 17 mths. of life Found out he is allergic to cow's milk, soy, eggs, and peanuts. Takes Prevacid, Neocate One Plus & Flovent.
I have been having a lot of GI issues myself since Aug. & one Dr. prescribed Carafate. I never took it because another Dr. overrode him & prescribed Prevacid (which made matters worse). Anyway, believe me when I say I have been very cranky these past couple of months because it doesn't feel good to have a constant upper GI pain!!! Maybe I'll try to carafate afterall. Hope both girls start feeling better soon. Ellen

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Here's praying for poop and answers from the scope!

I hope the m.o.m. works and fast. I am sorry that your little one is having so much pain. The constipation stuff is really bad. Has anyone suggested miralax, or is she too young. I hope that Emily continues to do well. Meggy never showed ulcers with the scopes, but sometimes carafate is still a miracle worker for her. I hope that she continues to be so happy and cheerful.

well, I am very glad that the carafate seems to be helping. Now to get to the bottom of it. I am so happy you are going to have her scoped. I know you and dh struggled with the testing issue, but now that you've seen a reoccurrence of the bloody poo, and a behavioural change because of carafate, it's definitely the best thing to do for Emi. Don' t you just LOVE when they talk?? Rory has been spewing words lately. I'm so glad she is feeling well enough to express herself with words, and not tears. I hope it's not an ulcer, but I hope you find answers. And hopefully that lil' Audrey will start going with the m.o.m. Poor little kiddos and poor mommy. Hang in there. OH, when are they going to scope her? Is it scheduled yet? I hope you don't have to wait too long. HUGS!
