Solids and reflux babies
All right, I just started trying to feed Atalia oatmeal with a spoon. Never had to put cereal in her bottle- thank God. Amalia never did this with cereal- it definetely looks like a texture thing- as soon as I put it in her mouth she starts making throwing up faces and coughing sounds- has not even tried to swallow it. And then of course, the next bite she just sticks her tongue out- every bite. I have only tried 1 tbsp and I can not even get through half of it. This is my second day trying. She is also teething horribly- 8 coming at the same time- gums are not letting her sleep- could the cereal on her gums make her do that also (cause feeding her the bottle due to the gums is a CHORE- it takes us at least 45 minutes , sometimes an hour- and sticking the nipple in the refrigerator makes it better). I have been thinking about putting the cereal in the refrigerator too. Any other thoughts or ideas? How long can this take for her to tolerate the texture? Do I just keep trying a little everyday or should I stop all together? Thanks a lot on any advice.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
My lo still won't take ceral off a spoon by itself, but she'll eat it mixed with other stuff. I too think it's texture-related. Maybe wait until those other teeth are breaking through and the gums aren't so sore? Or letting her play with the spoon to get used to it?

Renee, mother to Nicholas, born 4/18/08 with silent reflux, moderate laryngomalacia, Sandifer's Syndrome& suspected MSPI. On Neocate, Simply Thick and Prevacid. Also mother to Nathan, born 12/06/06, who had mild reflux the first few months.
I read somewhere that if they spit it out repeatedly, they may not be ready for solids. There is a reflex that causes them to do that (protective for when they are real small). It goes away sooner in some kids than others. Cereal texture is a toughy. You may want to try something smoother like green beans or squash. I noticed a difference with brands too. The Earth's Best peas were smoother than the Beech Nut and Nicholas tends to gag more on the Beech Nut.

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
I'm also thinking maybe wait a little while longer. I don't guess it would hurt to try it cold though.

Thanks for the dimple comment =)! I don't think it's the spoon because I give her the prevacid with a spoon and she actually loves it- would take more if I gave it to her. I don't want to try other solids yet because Amalia did not really start to tolerate them well until 8 months of age (at 4 months it gave them horrible gas and constipation) and green ones- I could not give them to her until 9 months of age (horrible gas). I'll wait until 6 months to start squash and stuff like that. Since she does not do the tongue thrust stuff with the prevacid- that's why I'm leaning more towards a texture thing vs. a reflex thing. But who knows. Thanks so much for your advice. I think I'll try it cold and see..If not wait until 5 months and see what happens. Hi Maggie's mom! Amalia continues to have relapses on and off and we have to increase the dose on and off...maybe when she is done teething...God Bless!

Hey Mely! I can't believe how much Atalia and Amalia look alike! And you are looking awfully good for someone who must not sleep and probably only gets to sit down for about ten seconds per day!

As for the food, one thing that worked pretty well for us was using one of those basket feeders -- you know the ones with a handle the baby can hold and a net for the food so they don't choke on chunks of things? I would put whatever I was going to try to feed him into one and freeze it the night before. He was much happier about sucking the contents out than he was about having it put into his mouth, and it really helped with teething pain.

Also, I didn't get a chance ot respond to the letter post you wrote -- beautifully done, and made me a little teary thinking about all these little miracles go through...

I love the picture! (first time I see a picture of you and lorenzo.) I'm glad the lack of sleep does not show much on the pic- but believe me- it's there =). Thanks for the basket idea. I think she will like that. Today she ate 1/2tbsp of oatmeal- cold. So teething looks like it's an issue. I hope lorenzo is doing better. God bless.
