Question about vaporizer-OT
Hey ladies, Rory has had a bad cough going on 3 weeks, which is much worse at night. I chalked it up to her being in daycare as a reason she hasn't kicked it yet. I have an appt on the 5th with her GP, so hopefully she'll know if it's just a cold or if it's an URI. Tonight, we bought a vaporizer for her room. She has been crying, and last time I checked on her she was soaked in sweat and it's not hot in there at all. Her temp was 97.4. Like I said, she's had the cough for a while, but never usually cries at night, just coughs. Should I unplug the vaporizer? Could it be making her worse? It's not near her crib, it's sitting in the middle of her room on the floor. I've never used one before, so I'm not sure if it could make her worse. Any thoughts? THANKS!!!

Naw, it's a steam vaporizer. I have been reading that they recommend using a cool mist humidifier for toddlers because of the possibility of burns. Rory can't climb out of her crib yet, but probably will be soon enough, so I think I will return it and get a humidifier. I just unplugged the vaporizer. She has bouts of sweatiness anyways, but the crying threw me off. Maybe it was "clearing" her up too much? She's in there snoring now. Besides a humidifier, is there anything else you can do for a cough/congestion? I tried vicks on the feet with socks, but she coughed WAY worse. I'm thinking it's loosening stuff up and making it harder for her to breathe. Thanks Jessica. I hope Jedd feels better soon too.

Mom to Eddie 1/07 and Nicholas 6/08. Eddie allergic and refluxer now on cow's milk!!!! Nicholas also a refluxer on prevacid and breast milk. Mom on elimination diet AGAIN!!
Hi Michelle I am so happy to hear rory is doing so well, eddis is still only eating purees and junk of course! And only with Barney playing. I ma not sure about the hmidifier, I also use the cool mist. I thought it was b/c of the mold with the warm one but I am not sure. Eddie was like that for about 2 months bronchilitis, ear infection, cough earinfection cough Ect. SO maybe she has one? what really helped him is that he is now on flovent twice an day and no more cow's milk, I am not sure which did the trick but he has been healthy (knock on wood) for 1 month now!

Like Jessica we were told to use a cool mist. Ava is doing a lot of nighttime coughing right now but we are pretty sure it is asthma and allergies. She is doing well with a cough meds and her "normal" asthma meds but she is older than Rory. I am glad you have an apt. Please let me know what they say. I hope everyone's little ones start feeling better soon. This time of year is so rough!!

Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
We have one of those table top Vicks plug things (can't remember what it's called). It uses these little Vicks soaked pads. They really helped Halley. Hope Rory feels better soon - sucks when they are sick :-(

I'll have to add a link to the one we have. We got it al WalMart. It has a spot for thsoe little pad thingys that have the fumes in them. Like Donessa sadi but it can go right on the machine and get dispersed that way. We also ahve been putting the vick's on Jedd's chest and feet.

He's soo funny. He expects it now...LMAO he even sighs really big when we do it. I think he understands that it is helping him. He's growign up I guess.

And yeah, it makes sense that she may be coughing more because it will break up the phlem (sp?). Here's a link to the one we have:

http://www.vicks.com/products/humidifiers

We have the one on the right, second one down. It is called the "V4500 FilterFree Humidifier". We really like it alot.

Renee, mother to Nicholas, born 4/18/08 with silent reflux, moderate laryngomalacia, Sandifer's Syndrome& suspected MSPI. On Neocate, Simply Thick and Prevacid. Also mother to Nathan, born 12/06/06, who had mild reflux the first few months.
We have the cool mist humidifier. We also use the Vick's baby rub and recently purchased the portable vapor/ fan unit that runs on batteries. I would think the one that goes on the vaporizer would be good too. Nathan is just getting over double ear infections/cold and he would cry at night too, so this may just be related to her not feeling well. Hope the little cutie is feeling better soon.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
We do the cool mist humidifier in both upstairs and downstairs, though mainly to keep the static down (my poor dog gets shocked every time she gets off the couch) but for the cough, before bed I'd do a steam bath - just sit in the bathroom and let the hottest shower you can run, and let Rory draw pictures on the mirror with the steam.

I doubt the vaporizor is the cause or worsening of the cough, but as it adds humidity to the air, it may be why she's sweaty.
