sharlin, mom to aviah, smith and faye (4/08)-dx with acid reflux (mostly silent) at 6 months.
Looking back I suspect she's been dealing with this for most of her little life. She's tried about every formula in the book and is currently on liquid alimentum, which has really helped a lot with her fighting feedings. We also tried zantac, but she became MUCH worse, and so we've been trying to work on helping her through her diet. she's also taking probiotics, and i'm hoping to get her eating some solids more regularly.
simply thick
will you give me your thoughts and experiences? my main issue with acid reflux with my little ones is the feedings. they give her pain, so she doesn't want to eat. i know she has some discomfort at other times, but it would be tolerable if the feedings were easier on her. i was adding solids to her bottle, but they made her constipated (rice cereal) and irritable (cereal and other stuff). (i think because it was too much at once-no slow transition to solids.) the solids did seem to help her accept eating better, but by evening we were going crazy because she was so unhappy. so i've got some simply thick coming, but wanted to hear everyone's thoughts. any issues with constipation, dehydration, allergies, irritability? did it make them feed more easily? thanks!

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
If there's issues with constipation and/or gas, it may have been the rice itself. We skipped rice and went to oatmeal cereal since rice is so constipating (my dd didn't have a BM on her own until 5 months old - I was going to buy stock in Babylax). I'd say don't give up on the meds entirely though - she may need a PPI instead of an H2 blocker - something like prilosec, prevacid, or nexium. Worth asking the MD about anyway. Is she having choking spells or coughing? Is her swallow reflex okay?

DS #1 (7/05) - Just ReDX'd Refluxer! Prevacid Solutab starting 4/8/09. Lots of food and environmental allergies. Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, Speech Delays, Developmental Delays, Severe Muscle Tone Weakness.
DS #2 (1/08) ReDX'd refluxer. Milk and soy allergies with Soy Lecithin allergies. Oat milk drinker, Rice protein powder, DHA, and vitamins added for bulk and needed nutrition. Weak muscle tone, slightly developmentally delayed, SPD confirmed.
My son couldn't handle any of the cereals either. He also couldn't tolerate the Thick It type products. But Simply Thick has been our answer. It works perfectly. He has had no allergy issue, no constipation issues and no diarrhea issues. I hope it works for you.

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
I know that the main ingredient for simply thick is xantham gum. Xantham gum is the natural name for corn syrup. They use it in powder form. So, if your lo is allegic to corn it will not set well with her. I know that is why we haven't been able to use a lot of the thickeners becuase of allergens in them. -Amanda

i don't know if she is allergic to corn, i just wonder if she could be since i think there has to be a reason for the reflux, and corn has been in everything so far. (well, when we first used soy and milk, i used the natures only which has rice syrup for sweetener.)

Renee, mother to Nicholas, born 4/18/08 with silent reflux, moderate laryngomalacia, Sandifer's Syndrome& suspected MSPI. On Neocate, Simply Thick and Prevacid. Also mother to Nathan, born 12/06/06, who had mild reflux the first few months.
Simply thick has worked great for Nicholas. Less spit up and if anything, I think he poops more on it than before. I love that it doesn't have the extra calories and that it doesn't have corn, which I understand to be a common allergen. We tried the packets first but now have the big jugs with the pump. It's easier than the cereal too because you can thicken ahead of time and it doesn't keep getting thicker over time.
