alex's mom
Alex was dx with silent reflux at 3 weeks old. Previously on Prevacid SoluTabs 15mg daily, now on trial of no medication. Was thought to have oral aversion, saw feeding specialist who says he's just not interested in food--no aversion at all. Slowly coming around to food. 15 months, 19lbs, 7 oz.
Duocal, does it work?
Hello! I am currently adding Duocal to anything that I can put in my son's mouth (liquid or solid). :) I was wondering if anyone has any success stories or not with any increase in weight gain while on this powder. I'm just trying to keep my expectations low for right now because I don't want to be disappointed. My ped doesn't think it will do much but I just bought a case of it and I figured it wouldn't hurt to try. :) I also want to know if this beats just adding butter to everything! Ha! Thanks everyone!

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
I asked our GI about it (as my son is the same age as yours and a pound lighter!), but he said no for now...he doesn't like empty calories, but let me tell you I'm tempted to just do it!! We are going to do the Upper GI on Monday and he wants to know what we're dealing with before we start supplementing...as far as I know, though, if he is getting in an extra 200 cal a day then it has to work! My problem is my son can't keep much down...(and he can't have butter...phhhh)

It works if you can get the kid to eat the food you put the duocal in. That's the tricky part .It didnt work for us when we tried it when Brent was a baby.

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
I have no info to tell you about the duocal. I have heard that it is hard to get them to eat anything with it in there though.

The thing I was goin gto tell you others was that I oldest dd, morgan, weighed right at 17 lbs on her 1st bday. She was barely 22lbs at 2 yo. She was perfectly healthy. Other than severe ear infections. She has some problems with reflux and asthma now but not then. I just want you to know that some kids are just smaller in stature. I know that you are dealing with a sick kid and it is hard to see them that way but they could just be a small child. I hope things go well for you and they start gaining.

Mom to
Son (10) GERD(aspiration pneumonias, apnea, tracheomalacia), Food allergy, Asthma
Daughter (6) GERD, Heart Murmur, Food Allergy, Asthma, Mold allergy
My daughter refused all foods with Duocal in it. Plus, like others have said, it is really not of any nutritional benefit, aside from empty calories. Might as well give my daughter an Oreo for a snack, LOL... Duocal didn't work here. Have you tried formula (like E028) instead? Or have you worked with a dietician to see if you need to add calories, or fat, or protein, or ??? what is missing from his diet? It is not always just calories that they need.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Ya know, if it adds the fat on that is much needed I'd go for it. Jedd eats an good diet but it is not balanced. He eats alot of Carnation Instant Breakfast nad heavy whipping cream. All though not the best for you, this is the only way we can get him to gain. Our dietician at our feeding clinic knows his diet and says it is okay for now.

I would suggest that you use it under the supervisino of a DR or a dietician though. You don't wan tto deprive the chidl of the nutriants that are needed by replaceing them wiht Duocal.

That all said even when Jedd was at the 3%tile line we still were told NOT to use it. It was pretty much (in our case) for a last resort use only.

Good lcuk, I hope this does the trick in the weight gain area.

Thanks for the info. Alex seems to be tolerating it in his formula and his pureed foods so far so I'll continue to use it. I'll let you all know if I see a big improvement. He lost some weight with his recent illness and I'm just trying to get him back to where he was. He just reached 18 lbs and then got vomiting and diarrhea. Poor little guy!

I'm trying to give him a balanced meal but it's tough with an oral aversion-er. SLP thinks it's behavioral so I'm just happy when he eats. :) His favorite thing right not is mac n cheese and canned green beans. I'm so afraid to stray from it for fear that he won't eat. I know that's crazy! The SLP suggested that I keep the mac n cheese flavor but change the shapes for now so that he can get used to the idea that "food looks different". Also, I thought that I would put mac n cheese on his try so he can finger feed himself and offer him other foods by spoon. I know, the minutia of my daily life is so exciting! LOL!
