Post Viral Gastroparesis...sorta OT
So, I am actually posting about my only child who does not have reflux or GI issues!! Maybe I should change that to "who did not used to have GI issues"...

The girls have had a stomach bug and over the past two weeks it has been passed through our house. One of the twins Ava seems to be unable to get over it. We are on day 5 of pukies but more like 10 days of abnormal behavior and eating.

The DR suggested that it is possible that she is just taking longer to get over the virus. The weird thing is that the puking has been every other day. Without fail and at about the same time of day. (Strange, right?).

They said that sometimes a virus can cause "post viral gastroparesis" which is, if I understand right, the same kind of thing as severe DGE. Which, I suppose, explains the every other day puking. It isn't a specific food it is just that it takes that long for her to be so full she needs to puke again (???)!!

Have any of you had any experience with this? I had heard of it but am, quite frankly, SHOCKED if it turns out that it is Ava who ends up with something like this. I would totally expect it (almost) out of Ella since she does have DGE still and reflux. Weird, right?

Anyway, we are doing easy foods. Small frequent feedings and NO DAIRY or other hard to digest foods.

I mostly would love for you to pray that it is just a virus that needs to run its course. I also wanted to let you guys know about this issue b/c kids with a history of GI issues are more likely to have this problem.

If anyone has experience with this please chime in! Love you all!!

(Ava is my skinny blonde in the pic. She is 30# at 3.5 so she doesn't have room to loose too much weight!!).

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
I may be wrong, but I thought Erica had posted about something like this. ???

When Mags had the virus once, she only threw up once a day and it was always in the evening. It didn't last that long though.....

Hugs to you all!

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
i would avoid sugar (sucrose) too from what i have researched it can make vomiting and diarehea worse in any post viral gastro problem. i remember reading somewhere about some pseudo obstructions can occur the same way as gastroparesis and that they are temporary. sometimes kids need a gut jumpstart of reglan or EES to get over the issue. i hope it goes away on it's own without it though, hoppe things get better for you all *hugs!*

My previous drivers license was also stolen. The new one has extra security features on it.
I hope it is just a virus and will be gone sooner rather than later. DGE is no joke. Hoping and praying for the very best outcome.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Oh those nasty stomach viruses are the worst. I had one last year that did last a couple weeks. I hope they feel better soon.

2 healthy daughters (knock wood) Cory (16), Kim (11) & Eric (4) diagnosed with e.e. (scoped 8/08), GERD & severe food/seasonal allergies, asthma. Cried non-stop first 17 mths. of life Found out he is allergic to cow's milk, soy, eggs, and peanuts. Takes Prevacid, Neocate One Plus & Flovent.
Not sure if we are talking about the same thing, but my oldest daughter (no medical problems) had a severe bout of food poisoning that caused her to vomit for weeks after the initial attack. I mentioned it to our allergist, who told me that sometimes after a virus (or food poisoning) they can become lactose intolerant for months after. She was acting ok other than the vomiting. After about a month she was fine & back to her old self. Hope your daughter is better soon. Ellen

Thanks everyone. So far so good today, though it is usually at about 3pm that she likes to empty her stomach. ;) So, time will tell.

We are watching the sugars and dairy so hopefully that will help. We may try Erythromycin b/f reglan since our other two had some issues with reglan.

I'll let you know what happens. Hopefully we are on the upswing but my "mommy instinct" tells me something is off. It would be nice to be wrong on this one!!

I know several people whose children have post viral gastroparesis. It's treated the same way as they treat DGE. One womans daughter got a virus as an infant, and then was dx'ed with post viral gastroparesis. She is tubefed,on medication for it.She also became FTT and has reflux. It does get better, and almost always completely but it takes time, can take months, can take years.... My kids have had stomach bugs that last 2 weeks, and literally take a month to get back to norm, so I wouldnt get too nervous yet!

Our 1 year old daughter has silent reflux, hypotonia as well as benign external hydrocephalus. We are currently weaning onto whole milk (we'll see if it works) and she is also on Prevacid 15mg per day.
I don't have any answers but I hope she gets better soon! Poor thing and poor mommy! :(
