Mommy of Hunter born 07/16/08. Tongue tied at birth, never learned to bf well. Diagnosed with silent reflux at 5 weeks with barrium swallow. Fed on expressed breast milk. Currently on Gaviscon, Omeprizole (prilosec), Domperidone (Motilium)have yet to see medication have any effect on him. His biggest symptom is his distain of feeding time- he hates it. . Hospitalised for two weeks in September, fed through ng tube.
rice cereal anyone??
So, we had a good 4 days and I got over excited and thought we d turned a corner.... silly me. Back to struggling to feed him. I caved in and bought some rice cereal to add to his bottle (along with the Gaviscon) to make the milk quite thick. Ive only given him one feed with it and he seemed to choke/cough a little less. I hate adding the cereal as he is only 14 weeks but Im just at the end of my rope with these horrible feeds . (HA! How many times have I said THAT!) And willing to try anything. Also.. Im seriously considering taking him off all these crazy meds.. THEY JUST ARENT WORKING!!! Any advice regarding the cereal or meds????

Cereal may be a little tough on the tummy. However, there are things like simply thick that may help and can be found at the local pharmacist.

You just have to go by your own child's cues and see what he can handle. Every child is different. Meggy couldn't handle the cereal at all.

Wishing u the very best. Sending hugs your way.

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
first he is a cutie!!!!!!! Maybe yiu can take him off one med at a time? We tried all meds (prevacid and zantac) but had to go back a few eeks later. How much cereal are you adding?

Thanks! I dont really know how much I should be going for , but I added about 2 tsp nto 3 oz then didnt think it was thick enough so added the Gaviscon. Is that too much?? Does cereal make them constipated? Can you give it every feed....so many questions!!

our GI said to do 1 tsp per ounce. Are you using cereal nipples? I have not seen them but a friend of mine is using them for her 2month old. Maybe just try adding it to the formula (or breast milk which ever) without adding the Gaviscon. See if that helps

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
the cereal made our situation way, way worse. he still puked and then the cereal started coming up too thereby adding to the damage done to his esophagus. we never tried the simply thick but heard great results. does he have silent reflux or is he puking? when did you switch to the nutramigen? we went to alimentum and after about 2 weeks he got better... not great.. but better.

Hello mom2coyle! Hunter has silent reflux . So , as Im sure you are well aware, it tough to find things that work and see the difference to know they are working. Im going to ask about the simply thick, the Gaviscon we use thickens , but he is still choking/coughing and I think thats whats turning him of to finishing his bottle , once he gags a few times he figures its better to just stop- dont blame the poor guy. I didnt give the Nutramigen a full run. Probably should have but he isnt exhibiting alleric symptoms other than during feedings....I just dont know anymore *sigh*

are you nursing now then or using pumped milk or regular formula? if he is choking/gagging while feeding this sounds more like a problem with latch on the bottle... did you ever have the tongue tie clipped? coyle's suck improved greatly after his was clipped @ 2 mo. they too missed his and he was never able to nurse because of it. what nipple/bottles do you use?

Renee, mother to Nicholas, born 4/18/08 with silent reflux, moderate laryngomalacia, Sandifer's Syndrome& suspected MSPI. On Neocate, Simply Thick and Prevacid. Also mother to Nathan, born 12/06/06, who had mild reflux the first few months.
We used the rice cereal for awile and it helped but we found the simply thick worked better for Nicholas. I would definitely try the cereal first as it is much less expensive and may work just fine for your lo. Good luck! (We did use Dr Brown "Y"/cereal nipples)

He is on all expressed milk. Nursing just upsets him (and me!) I use Dr.Browns Bottles . He has major gulping issues, I dont know if thats reflux related? But to be honest even with the bottles he still gets so much air in. Here in the UK we dont have a very good selection of "specialty" bottles, but Im getting my Mom to send me some playtex ventaitrs over. Tongue tie has been clipped. I thought the gagging and choking was the reflux coming up as he ate?

1st of all GOOD for you! what a tough job you have still pumping and fighting the bottle feeding :( you are very strong. what level nipple? the flow might be either too fast or too slow. id see about having a ST look at him to make sure he is suckling right and maybe a swallow study or upper GI done if he is choking during feeds...

What exactly do the swallow study and upper GI entail? He has had a barrium swallow, and a "scope" by the ENT doc .. is any of that the same??

DS #1 (7/05) - Just ReDX'd Refluxer! Prevacid Solutab starting 4/8/09. Lots of food and environmental allergies. Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, Speech Delays, Developmental Delays, Severe Muscle Tone Weakness.
DS #2 (1/08) ReDX'd refluxer. Milk and soy allergies with Soy Lecithin allergies. Oat milk drinker, Rice protein powder, DHA, and vitamins added for bulk and needed nutrition. Weak muscle tone, slightly developmentally delayed, SPD confirmed.
We found the rice cereal wasn't nearly as effective as Simply Thick. We were able to control the thickness better with Simply Thick, it didn't add any calories, didn't put a food into his tummy that his body wasn't ready for and, honestly, rice cereal just didn't work nearly as well as Simply Thick for his reflux. But, and it has to be said, your little one is so cute. I am loving the picture of him with the cat!!! He's just adorable and, at 14 weeks, has more hair than my 9 month old son. Hehehe.

those two check for reflux but a swallow study i think (im not sure) will watch how he drinks.. you migh twant to ask your doctor about that as well. coyle had poor suck even after his tongue was clipped but it improved by about 3 mo. it gets bad again when sick or teething and he still chokes on water.
Check with your
doctor first!
