zack'smom
Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
intentional gagging
do any of your kids do this...Z has started shoving his whole fist in his mouth to throw up...he's always gagged, but this is new and horrible. Any advice appreciated. I left a message for the GI who is out today.

Some kids do this because they have esophagitsis, and are literally trying to get at the source of pain. Then some kids do it because of a behavioral issue(rumination)

I think most kids, even without health concerns do this at some time or another normally. Teething is a good example too, like Coy's mom said above.

When we initially had Rory to our local feeding clinic, this was one of Mike's biggest concerns. I knew from PAGER that it was a typical refluxer behaviour, but he was CONVINCED she was doing it on purpose. The clinic strongly emphasized that she was doing it because of her reflux. She was scoped shortly thereafter and did not have esophagitis, and they determined her feeding difficulties to be behavioural. We always wondered if that meant her self-induced gagging/vomiting was also behavioural, like Mike said. Teething could also be a contributor. Rory will still gag herself for kicks, because of our reactions. We try not to react, but when she does it on the bus and starts to wretch, I say as quietly and desperately as I can "DON'T YOU DARE!!!" LOL. I do not need her puking on the bus, especially since people stand in the aisle in front of us. Our transit system is HORRIBLE. Okay, I'm off track, sorry. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Try not to "react" when he does it, just sternly tell him no. But I truly feel for you.....It's bad enough when they puke for no good reason, it's another thing for the little stinkers to do it to themselves. UGH.

Pictured: G'mom w/3 kids. I'm mom to 1 angel Melissa (dec'd 11/92 - hypoplastic left-heart syn.)
2 healthy daughters (knock wood) Cory (16), Kim (11) & Eric (4) diagnosed with e.e. (scoped 8/08), GERD & severe food/seasonal allergies, asthma. Cried non-stop first 17 mths. of life Found out he is allergic to cow's milk, soy, eggs, and peanuts. Takes Prevacid, Neocate One Plus & Flovent.
Eric was choking too often during feeding time & then he started to put his whole hand in his mouth. Looked like he was trying to get to the throat. He is 2 1/2 & just diagnosed with e.e. I'm not saying your son has anything that severe, but I'm sure that's why Eric had his hand in his mouth like that. I don't remember my girls doing anything quite like that. Ellen
