I know Z isn't the only one on here with an aversion...but what does this sound like to you? He used to o one serving of cereal mixed with formula and eithera fruit or veggie every day...he did quite well with it. The the last two-three weeks he has been refusing it or taking a couple bites and making himself throw up. This last weekend I gave it a shot and made some up...gave him one bite that he openned his mouth for, then he started gagging and puking..so I backed off and ended the session. An hour or so later I thinned the cereal out even more so he could drink it. I put it in his fav cup and he took a sip..the minute he realized it wasn't formula he started gagging and he puked it up. My original thought was that this was a spoon issue...but now I think he's averse to anything that ISN'T formula...why would this happen now? His first bottle in the morning is ceral and formula...so the cereal is OK...the fruit is the only addition...he tasted that and BLECH...sigh....this poor kid. (and poor me)

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
He probably doesn't realize he's getting cereal in the bottle in the a.m. abd there fore will take it. Also there is a big taste/texture difference between ceral with formula and ceral mixed with fruit.

There are all sorts of food aversions. There are children who will take liquid but no solids.Your sono seems to be liek this one.

There are children who will take solids but no liquids.Jedd is this one as long as it is a puree.

There are kids who will only take certain color foods, yes this is true!!! My sister's DD is like this, she has an afinnity for white colored foods, mash. potatoes, pastas, ect...

Some kids are very averse to the utensils...spoons, forks, cups. And will only take their food from very special containers and utensils.Jedd is and was partly like this as well. We work him to a Z-Vibe Spoon and then weaned him to it when it was NOT vibrating and then weaned him to a normal metal toddler spoon. He is still averse to normal sippy cups and will only swallow when I squeeze from a hair Color application bottle. The feeding center at KKI in Baltimore uses those for their feeding aversion kids.

This is part of the reason why what will work for one kiddo may not work at all for another.

I would look into getting some oral motor tools for him to wrok with and chew on. You can go to WalMart and get their vibrating star. Alot of kids liek that. Jedd has a vibrating corn cob form Babies R Us and he reallylikes that. He will STILL chew on that thing and he's 2!!!!!

You can also work with Early INtervention and get them to purchase things like chewy tubes and Nuk Brushes or even a Z-Vibe. For us, the Z-Vibe was the BEST invention ever!!!!

Again, I really think it is all part of an oral aversion. But I really would look into EI they can see for themselves what is going on and then make suggestions form there.

Maybe he had a bad reflux flare after fruit and he remembers the taste so as soon as he tastes it he gags. I have can't smell or eat lemon donuts because I ate one and then had the stomach flu (I won't go into detail) so I have an adversion to it. Kids are just to darn smart. He maybe assoicates fruit with reflux?!?!? I'm just thinking out loud here and could be off. But fruits are hard on a reflux baby.

Thanks guys. It's just so weird because banana and sweet potatoes were his safe foods...he had no problem with them and now they are evil! Hopefully therapy will help...we have several of those tools...the Nuk and special spoons to chew on...special cups..he loves to drink from a cup or juice box, but a regular straw is still out and so is a sippy... What is the Z vibe? I saw it on Beyond Play.com, but i thought a vibrating anything would be freaky!!!

My previous drivers license was also stolen. The new one has extra security features on it.
It could be the texture or he could be showing that he knows certain foods hurt him more than others. Meggy completely weaned herself off of dairy one product at a time. I think they know their bodies, we just have to listen.

Our Z-vibe was bought through Ark theraputics. They were great becuae the motor died within a wek and they sent me 2 replacemtns for free.

Jedd really liked the vibrations from the ends of the z-vibe. It is a high frequency vibration. You can even hear it until you place the end of the probe onto something. Liek I would place it onto the high chair so that Jedd would know that it was viibrating. After a few times, it was his absolute favorite thing to chew on.

There are also these things called Jigglers. They are in the shape of an Elephant or a Alligator. Jedd loved thiose aas well. We started with those, That may be why he took so well to the z-vibe form the get go. He used to run aroudn the house with hi salligator and elephant chewing on them as well.

Now the only thing about the z-vibe is the fact that ANY little amount of moisture including slobber will cause the motor will DIE. So you have to be very careful when cleaning it and using it.

hmmm, i don't know a lot about your lo's history, but this is about the age that Elyse quit eating baby cereal and purees altogether...i think she actually quit eating cereal around 10 mos... Can he try any finger foods? We started with rice crispies...no choking possibility, very allergy friendly, and so tiny that it really worked on her pincer grasp. She loved the gerber puffs but they didn't love her!

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
we had the same thing happen as did sharon. coyle just went thru a stage where he wanted nothing off a spoon, no mushy stuff, etc. etc. he would gag too. lasted about 2-3 weeks. only finger foods were a go-cherrios, crackers, puffs, and so on. recently he is back to loving food from a spoon and is even trying to feed himself with the spoon. can u try allergy-free finger foods as suggeted?
