ethan's mom
Meridith, mom to Ethan born 4/23/08. Ethan was diagnosed with reflux at about 1 month. He has been on Zantac (unsuccessful) and Prevacid. He is currently taking 7.5 mg of Prevacid 2x per day, with good results. We also suspect MPI, though this hasn't been confirmed by a doctor yet.
Ethan is mostly breastfed, though we are doing one bottle of soy formula each day. We also do some homeade "solids' including, so far pears, avocado, sweet potato, and peaches.

GI Appt
Well, we had our long awaited first GI appointment today, and I am wavering between frustration and optimism.

They weighed Ethan, and the weight was in kg, so she converted it to pounds for me and said it was right around 15. I don't know the exact ounces, but I was so happy to hear it! That is 1.5 pounds in just one month, and 1.5 inches too. No wonder his 0-3 month pants are all too short. lol

Basically the doctor told us everything that we already knew, thanks to all of you. He said that reflux was just an immature system, that it would just have to be grown out of, that eosoniphilic Esophagitis, or whatever, is a possibility, but that since there is no sure fire treatment, other than avoiding the allergens, which you can't guarantee finding, there wasn't really any reason to test for that, so long as he was growing and developing. He said that there is no evidence that Prevacid is harmful for children under one, but the population hadn't been studied either.

He encouraged me to keep breastfeeding, even with the feeding issues, to keep going on the purees, consider thickening feedings, etc. He wasn't too excited about elimination diets, though he said if I tried to cut something and it seemed to help, keep going with it.

I guess ultimately I wanted an answer to the feeding, but the reality of the circumstance is that there is nothing, short of a possible surgery, that would stop the reflux, other than time.

So, I think that I have decided to go back to breast feeding, try to stop the formula, and feed him his purees, with a heavy emphasis on pears to help with the constipation. We'll see how this goes, and if it is bad, I'm going to pull out all of my hair, and then go with a strict elimination diet.

I know that in the spectrum of things, Ethan's reflux is fairly mild, so I should be content, but I just want so badly for something to work. I was hopeful that this doctor had the magic answer, just discovered in the wee hours of the morning lol.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
I know your pain...you wait and wait for a GI appt and you want a magic answer...and there just isn't one. I am so frustrated that there isn't a miracle drug for this stupid reflux. Good luck to us both.

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
15 lbs!!!! way to go little man! That is great! You sprouted like Joslyn did! I feel your pain like Zack's mommy does. Hey congrats on going back to bfing. Lord knows it is not easy! I hope it continues to work. If it helps Joslyn only nurses for 4 mins each side now. We still offer 1- 1.5 oz of bm in a bottle after each feeding. She seems content with only 8 mins nursing. Sometimes longer... butmost of her feedings are 8-10 mins. Hey maybe one lucky insanley smart mommy from PAGER will find the cure!

I'm sure when there is a cure for this, it will be a reflux mom who figures it out!

I have 3 boys, youngest has gerd, 18 months of no sleep. Prevacid 2x/7.5 mg thinking of switching to prilosec.
Hi Ethan's mom. We are in the same boat, medicine wise, except for one thing. We use mylanta for those rougher nights- only 1/2 tsp. I am telling you this becz it had an addit'l effect of softened bms. The doc told us to give him 2 tsp. We could not get that much into him and 1 tsp caused very loose bms so we cut down amount. My son is 18 mo. Just an FYI if constipation worries you.

I kind of went out on my own and have tried the Mylanta thing, 1/2 teaspoon, when it seems like he is having bad reflux. I'm not sure that we are giving it enough to help with constipation, but I will keep that in mind.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
I know how frustrating it is. You just want him to be a normal content baby. Hang in there. He may just grow out of it. Glad you are able to keep breast feeding.

Renee, mother to Nicholas, born 4/18/08 with silent reflux, moderate laryngomalacia, Sandifer's Syndrome& suspected MSPI. On Neocate, Simply Thick and Prevacid. Also mother to Nathan, born 12/06/06, who had mild reflux the first few months.
We all want the magic, instant cure. I don't think any of us have found it. We switched Nicholas to neocate and thought we had it made as his all over body rash got better the first two weeks and now it's back with a vengeance. It seems like it's all just trial and error and time...and a lot of prayer!!! Just kiss him and love him and have faith that he will most likely grow right out of these issues and better days should be ahead!!
