Our 1 year old daughter has silent reflux, hypotonia as well as benign external hydrocephalus. We are currently weaning onto whole milk (we'll see if it works) and she is also on Prevacid 15mg per day.
Feeding Aversion Help
So talked to the pedi once again today as Keira is once again not wanting anything but the whole milk and she flat refuses anything else. He thinks she's got an aversion to food for whatever reason and wants me to call her OT and see about help w/ this or take her to a specialized feeding clinic. I'm so upset. I try so hard and I feel like I fail even harder. Is there any reason why there are these aversions? i just don't get why she was fine w/ foods while on formula and now she only wants her milk. I've tried finger foods, dry foods, wet foods, warm/cold foods, different places to eat- nada. I've tried even letting dh work w/ her instead of me...nope. It's like as much as she gets better in one area then more come out to play. Any info about feeding clinics or work w/ an ot over this I'd greatly appreciate. Thanks...

I don't have any ideas for you but I wanted to send out a friendly hug your way. You are a great mom who is doing everything she can to help Keira. I'm sorry that it seems to be getting harder then easier. I hope you can find an awesome ot and/or feeding clinic. Hang in there.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Let me know where you are located (state) and I can give you direction as to the best ones near you. The best ones are on the East coast unfortunetly if you are not near there...

Feeding Aversions are the hardest thing to deal with. There is such a broad spectrum of behaviors going on. Some will take liquids like a champ but completely refuse solids. Some kids are the complete opposite, they will eat you out of house and home but completely refuse to take any liquids and there fore get dehydrated or need a tube for fluids....some still yet, refuse everthing all together.

It is good that they are trying to get you to a clinic, Those people are amazing and do wonderful things with children. I would look to it as a wonderful opportunity to get hlep with the feeding issues. They will also take over the feeding sessions for you thereby relieveing you of the stress of the hardest part of the process. After a bit they do start weaning YOU into the process so that you can do it at home.

Look to be in a good program for about 6-8 weeks. They either do it in paitent or out paitent where you go in every day but go "home" to a hotel or Ronald McDonald house in the evening. Depneding upon the severity is how they will determine which you will do.

Let me know if you ahve any other questions.

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
We've got an appointment with an occupational therapist to help us work on feeding issues a week from Friday. I'll let you know how it goes. It seems like one of the big challenges with aversion in toddlerhood is that almost all toddlers go through stages of being averse to some, most or all foods for periods of time, so it can be hard to tell what is really going on. It seems like it would be helpful to get some objective information and assistance if its available to you, if for no other reason than to help your own confidence when it comes to feeding issues. ((HUGS))

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
We have been seeing a therapist for feeding for a few weeks now and it helps...but it's slow and really hard. We had a good therapy last night where Z tried new things...and a terrible one last week where he avoided everything...I'm hoping we will get there soon...it's so tiring and all the kids around him are eating real food...but not him...poor thing...his aversion is due to reflux and being on a tube for a month...it just scared him away from all of the stuff going down his throat. The prevacid helped some and now he takes formula OK, but not much else. GOOD LUCK!

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
We just got the OT referral today. How long has this been going on? Katie stopped eating 4 days before her sinus infection really took hold so maybe she is not feeling well?
Check with your
doctor first!
