Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Picturesof Sebastian's "spider bite" or vaccination site? I have no idea what this is, but it is nasty!

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
looks like a spider bite to me! yikes! I have gotten those a few times.. they hurt

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
HEHEHE We get a shot of Lousia (sp?) going poo!!! LOL

That looks really painful poor Sebastian. What did they tell you to do if it keeps spreading???? I'd draw a pen mark around it so you can see if it spreads any more.

I'd guess a bite of some sort too. Keep an eye on it so it doesn't turn into cellulitus.

How will I know if it becomes cellulitis? I guess I should just google this....

Alex was dx with silent reflux at 3 weeks old. Previously on Prevacid SoluTabs 15mg daily, now on trial of no medication. Was thought to have oral aversion, saw feeding specialist who says he's just not interested in food--no aversion at all. Slowly coming around to food. 15 months, 19lbs, 7 oz.
I think it's cellulitis
Hi! I've looked at your pictures and I think it is early cellulitis. Did you draw around the site to see if it has increased in size? Is it still very warm and firm to touch? Any fevers overnight? Cranky? Pain symptoms? I think Sebastian would benefit from a course of antibiotics. I'm a firm believer in "if it won't hurt, why not try it". If your son doesn't have any drug allergies, it would be useful to put him on a course. You can also try Benadryl (will make him sleepy) but the benefit would be that it will decrease the redness and if it is a true reaction to vaccines will help resolve it (which I doubt). What did your doc suggest? Just waiting? Or do you have a followup? Let me know. Will try to help in anyway I can! :)

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Ouch! Has it spread? Maybe he's just more sensitive than the average person, but I'd watch it. (like you wouldn't do that any way)

Alex's mom - Hi and thanks for the feedback. Well, it does feel warm to the touch, but so does the rest of him (he is a big-time sweater)...so I don't think I can accurately assess that one. He's not very cranky, either, although he usually isn't. He isn't exhibiting much in the way of pain symptoms, either but then again, he did a faceplant on the concrete a few weeks back and cried for about a minue, then went about his business. He is always pretty bruised up (sometimes to the point where I wonder what people think I do to him...), and he never seems to care. He is like that when he has ear infections, allergic reactions, etc. He is just too busy to let anything slow him down, which is both a blessing and a HUGE annoyance. Doesn't make me feel good about my mommy radar.

He is allergic to a few meds that we know of, but of those, only one is an antibiotic (Omnicef) - and I don't think they would give it for a reaction like this (but I wouldn't know). He does fine on Amoxicilin and Augmentin.

His little spot has a very hard head in the middle now, but it is just red like the rest of it...no little pus spot.

I've been putting the Benadryl cream on it, but I haven't noticed any improvement. We avoid the oral Benadryl unless it is an absolute necessity (hasn't been yet, knocking on wood very loudly) because Sebastian is one of the 5% of kids (of course) who gets all hyper, mad, and hysterical on antihistimines. He stays that way until they wear off (most recent attempt was Zyrtec in early summer. NOT PLEASANT FOR ANYONE INVOLVED). I try to avoid having him turn into an angry bear!!

Thanks again for all your help, mommies!!

It could definately be a bite,I has a similar looking spider bite on my face, my daughter and Brent have even had mosquito and ant bites that that look like this, they are allergic to them. He may need an some abx, when my face got bit, and Lauren and Brent get bit and it gets infected, they have to have abx asap. It does look like it's turning to cellulitis. Is it hot to the tough? Drawing a ring around it with a pen to know if it is spreading is a great idea, that is what our ped had me do. I would watch him close, if it starts to spread worse he definately needs to be seen, if I were you, I might would go ahead and have it checked even if it doesnt spread, he may need abx.

Hhhmmm....the hard part in the center is what worries me. When you start to see pus or any discharge is when it has become fully infected and will start an abscess which you don't want. My son is a busybody too so I know what you mean about the pain scale. Has it grown in size? Some people are more sensitive to insect bites than others. Meaning that some kids can tolerate a bite and it will resolve on it's own with time. Others will actually get infected. If Sebastian tolerates Augmentin, I would try it only because if he gets an abscess you will have to have it lanced (very painful). I don't want to scare you since I can't see it for myself. If you have a good relationship with your pedi doc than I would ask for a followup. If you are comfortable having Sebastian take meds then I would push for it. If you prefer waiting than I would give 1-2 more days. Good luck!

Ouch! Sorry to tell u this, but Meggy had this but over a week after her chicken pox vac.

Hopefully it will go away on it's own but it might be useful to have someone take a look. Has he ever had anything like that before.

Can't help u in the spider bite department. My only experience was on my back by a brown recluse and those are pretty poisonous little creatures.

Hope it clears soon.

Jessica (6/11/07) Silent reflux dx at 3 weeks
Went off meds successfully at 3 mos
Went back on Prevacid 8 mg TID 1/3/08
You need to take your child to the doctor!!!! My husband is an infectious disease doctor. This could very well be cellulitis caused by MRSA and it is easily treated by antibiotics(despite the scares).

I love when you sneak in pics of Louise doing something crazy!! I'm not sure about the "bite" but just wanted to let you know about a crazy thing we saw on Dr. G last night. There was a guy who thought he had a spider bite, went on vacation, ended up with a high fever & back pain. Anyway, I won't say what happened to him, but it ended up being MERSA (I know that isn't spelled right). So, if it looks infected on he gets a fever, just have it checked out, ok? Ellen

I did not read all the responses and I am behind on posts so I don't really know what's going on, but Elyse's leg looked similar after her last tetanus shot.

And wait, how come your DOG can drink out of a glass and my human child cannot?

Check with your
doctor first!
