Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
I think Sebastian has a spider bite (OT)
I am sooooooooooooooooooooooo scared of spiders and no matter what I do, I can't seem to rid my stupid new house of ants (they have infested my top floor, which has never had food in it...at least not since we moved here), vermin (Gerald the mouse who is torturing my pooping on the traps and then going about his business ), and some centipedes in my basement (Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww)...and now SPIDERS. What the hel*????????????????????????

So anyway, Sebastian had a little mosquito-bite like bump on his thigh on Friday, and by yesterday, it was about an inch across and really dark red...with a little pimply center. Today, it is about 1.5 inches across (which looks HUGE even on Sebastian's treetrunk thighs). It is REALLY red. When I press on it, it feels like a knot under the skin, kind of exactly like it feels if you touch their legs after your kids get vaccinations and the spot swells a little. He just woke up crying 30 min into hsi nap and when I went in there, he was all sweaty even though the thermometer says 73 degrees and he is wearing shorts and a onesie.

Since I am 1) incredibly paranoid anyway and 2) worried because of his allergies, I am taking him to the doc today at 4:50. I'll keep you posted! I hope it is nothing. I am just worried because it looks worse even though he doesn't seem bothered by it at all.

I am DEFINITELY getting an exterminator now. Sorry, DH, there goes your birthday money.

Oh the poor little guy! I am so petrified of centipedes! This is also OT but since you are talking about them. When Dh and I were first married we rented the top floor of a duplex. Well one night I woke up feeling like something was crawling on my arm. I brushed at it thinking I was dreaming and jumped out of bed. I turned the light on just in time to see a centipede run under the covers!! OMG I flipped out!! And there is Dh half asleep and blind b/c he isn't wearing his glasses trying to kill it LOL! It was a slight I tell ya! I slept on the couch for the next few weeks until the exterminator came and I made sure they were gone. That is when we started looking to buy a house! ;) I hope the exterminator works and gets rid of your unwanted guests!

Gosh girl! You do need an exterminator. Could it be what Jen R's little girl had. Remember her pic on facebook. It was from a mosquito bite. Anxious to hear what he says!

Wait a minute! Sebastian had the chicken pox shot, MMR, and something else for meningitis (Presnar or something?) shot on Thursday, Oct 2. I don't know which shots he got in which leg, but the weird bump seems to be in the same spot as where he had a shot that day. I understand that the MMR can cause a delayed reaction (7-10 days, I think?)...I am wondering if this could be from that?? Would that cause a welt? I thought it caused a fever and a rash. We don't have a rash. I am so tired of playing guessing games with this kid.

My previous drivers license was also stolen. The new one has extra security features on it.
Meggy did have the type of reaction you describe from the Chicken pox vaccination, along with other reactions. I am told it is RARE-(yeah right), to react to vaccinations.

I am hoping Sebastians is nothing more than a mosquito bite and will be gone in a few days. Please do let us know what you find out.

Picture: This is what happens when you raise a kid on health food and they get ahold of a Coke! Bad mom, that soda is NOT on the reflux diet.
UPDATE: Isaiah is now 12 and off meds! He is doing great, eating again and hopefully will be catching up in the growing department. I am still in the "hoping it sticks" phase, but we're so happy that he's better!
Hmmm, could be either a spider bite OR a reaction to the shot. Isaiah had a terrible reaction to the dpt shot, bad enough that they didn't give it to him again (he can just have the T part...they think it's the D that caused the reaction). Anyway, it's possible that it's a reaction, or even some sort of little infection from the stick itself...is he running any kind of a fever? Isaiah had high fever, the shot site was hot and hard (like you described, but no pustule) and he screamed for hours and hours. I don't think you're an overprotective mom, I'd do the exact same thing...especially with his allergy history. Also, so relieved to hear that you're not pooping in the mouse traps! That's a new technique for extermination....LOL. Seriously, I am *terrified* of spiders and I hate the idea of being infested with *anything*, so I feel your pain. I am not what I'd consider your typical "girly girl", had no trouble dissecting cadavers in college and was a rock climber until I had the kids, and Isaiah even has a pet mouse that I adore. but boy-oh-boy, if something small and fuzzy runs across the kitchen floor...or something with more than 4 legs drops down in front of me...I scream like one of those bubble-headed girls in a 1950's movie. Ick!

One of the shots do cause bumps under the skin but I can't remember which one. Maggie's was there a while. Hopefully that's what it is.

alex's mom
Alex was dx with silent reflux at 3 weeks old. Previously on Prevacid SoluTabs 15mg daily, now on trial of no medication. Was thought to have oral aversion, saw feeding specialist who says he's just not interested in food--no aversion at all. Slowly coming around to food. 15 months, 19lbs, 7 oz.
Hope this helps...
Hi Melissa! You responded to a post I had the other day and I just wanted to say thanks for that -mom guilt gets me all the time! I'm a PA and worked in the ER before I was a mom...so I hope this helps. From what you describe...warm to touch, feels firm underneath the redness...is there any sign of a bite (ie just a dot of where he was bit, a small scratch, pustule, etc). It's hard to tell without pictures but he might have early cellulitis (underlying skin infection) from the spider bite which causes pain and low grade fever and will worsen if untreated. It is easily treated with oral antibiotics and topical antibiotic ointment. It doesn't sound like it would be a reaction to the vaccinations (in my experience). I would apply a cold compress to the area if it helps the pain. Please follow up with your doctor and let us know how it goes. :)

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
spider bites are hot in the middle to the touch.. hot/warm.... is his like that?

Meridith, mom to Ethan born 4/23/08. Ethan was diagnosed with reflux at about 1 month. He has been on Zantac (unsuccessful) and Prevacid. He is currently taking 7.5 mg of Prevacid 2x per day, with good results. We also suspect MPI, though this hasn't been confirmed by a doctor yet.
Ethan is mostly breastfed, though we are doing one bottle of soy formula each day. We also do some homeade "solids' including, so far pears, avocado, sweet potato, and peaches.

I'm not sure if you can do it, with the allergy situation, but a natural ant killer/deterrent is lemon juice or lemon oil. I'd google it to verify which one, but my parents bought a house, apparently on top of an ant hill, and my mom used this.

Hopefully the bite is nothing serious.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Easy way to tell if it's spreading - mark the outside of the area with a sharpie and monitor. if it goes outside the lines, get into the MD to make sure nothing's funky. Spider bite, insect bite, sting, or reaction, at least this will give you an idea if it's going elsewhere than it should be (sorry for the grammar...long day)

Hi everyone! Thanks so much for all your advice and concerns! Much appreciated, as always. I swear, I get much more help from you all than anywhere else.

Well, we are back from doctor (well, the urgent care place that takes appts), and although we are $25 poorer, we still have no idea what the mysterious welt on Sebastian's leg is! The doctor said that if it were from the vaccine, we would have seen a bump this entire time...but we haven't. He then said that he has never seen a delayed vaccine reaction like this, so he doesn't think it is one. He said it could be an insect bite but that because the welt isn't oozing or full of pus, whatever it is isn't infected. We are to watch it for a day or two and make sure it doesn't worsen.

Alex's mom - I wonder if it is cellulitis? I am going to read up on it. Thanks very much for the advice. I know Jen Rackley's daughter recently had this, so she might have some advice, too, on how to help diagnose it. I will post some pictures tomorrow if I can. I appreciate it!

Jacky - nope, not warm or anything like that. It's so weird!!

Gosh, hope it goes away without any to do. Hate to burst your bubble on the exterminator front, but as far as spiders go, there really isn't much you can do. We have an exterminator who comes regularly for fire ants etc. We have HUGE-I MEAN HUGE-spiders here. One that was 12 inches with beady eyes that followed me across the room-only as seen on TV spiders! The exterminator said there is nothing you can spray to get rid of spiders. The spray would have to hit them directly to have any effect. He recommends just brushing them and their cobwebs away as often as possible.
