Our 1 year old daughter has silent reflux, hypotonia as well as benign external hydrocephalus. We are currently weaning onto whole milk (we'll see if it works) and she is also on Prevacid 15mg per day.
Freaking Out/ot
So today I let Keira have some apple juice. Normally she rarely ever has juice and doesn't even like it much. But as I was giving her some my friend says "I hope that's pasteurized." I had given Keira Earth's Best Organic apple juice for Tots. No where on the box can I find anything on there about it being pasteurized. Of course the company is closed on the weekend. Does anyone know if it's safe? :( I hope she doesn't get sick. I guess I assumed it was as it was in the baby isle and I have used Earth's Best for many of her solids in the past. :(

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
I'd be shocked if it wasn't pasteurized. If you found it on the shelf, then it most likely was.

Yeah it was on the shelf in the baby isle. I can't imagine that this store would sell unpasteurized juices in the baby isle. I do remember though that last year there was some issue w/ the Odwalla juices but that wasn't in the baby section those were all in the fridge section.

My understanding is that you'll only find "raw" juice in the refrigerated section (and even then it's not often that it won't be pasteurized). If it's on the shelf, then they have to pasteurize it (similar to how you have to heat fruit, etc. to can them). Sorry that her off-hand remark scared you...I would have felt the same way.

If it has the USDA seal (which I verified it does) it has to be pasturized (among a bunch of other things). A simple way to tell if a juice has been pasturized is to see where it's located in the store. If it's on the shelf, it's pasturized. If it can only be stored in the cold section, even before opening, there's a chances it's not pasturized. Earth's Best is shelf stable, thus it's pasturized. Hope that helps.

ok thanks for the info! I never really had to worry about it before as I'm not much of a juice drinker :)

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
I'm pretty sure that that applies more to foods and drinks in other countries where everything isn't processed or automatically pasteurized. I think it would have to be if it is sitting on a shelf, even in a sealed container...
Check with your
