Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
Antibiotics and refluxers
I saw some posts today referencing the problems refluxers can have with antibiotics and reflux...can someone elaborate for me. I've never heard of a connection between the two before. My son is on abx right now for a minor ear infec. and this past week he has been refusing his daily cereal and throwing up after just a couple bites. He's doing OK with the formula, but terribly with cereal...just wondering!!

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
interesting to me too. Joslyn has not had to be on antibiotics and if/when she does I would like to know what to look out for

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Maggie has been on abx many times :( However, most of hers were after her reflux was better. I haven't heard of the abx messing with the reflux, but any illness makes reflux flare. Also abx will cause different reactions. a common one is diarrhea that usually leads to a nasty rash. Maggie is allergic to penicillin so she broke out in hives with augmentin. Omnicef gave her the bad tummy and rash. I hope he does well!

Meggy's reflux flared. She also had an allergic reaction to penicillin with hives all over her body. I can't remember exactly how long, but seemed like the hives lasted 5 days.

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!

Hi Zack's Mom! I think the discussion started because Katie's GI just put her on Erythromycin and I was asking what some of the side effects are. The reason she put her on it is right now Katie has a sinus infection and for the first time in her life is having a bm daily so we are hoping that the motility drug (erythomycin) will help clear her out quicker so that her reflux improves.

How long has he been on abx?

Katie refused to eat for a little over a week and then started eating to make up for the time. We were in the drs office every day and no one could figure out why she wouldn't eat and then she woke up yesterday starving and ready to eat! I think that because they are refluxers they can go a little longer without eating and feel fine since they associate eating with hurting.

Check with your
doctor first!
