ethan's mom
Meridith, mom to Ethan born 4/23/08. Ethan was diagnosed with reflux at about 1 month. He has been on Zantac (unsuccessful) and Prevacid. He is currently taking 7.5 mg of Prevacid 2x per day, with good results. We also suspect MPI, though this hasn't been confirmed by a doctor yet.
Ethan is mostly breastfed, though we are doing one bottle of soy formula each day. We also do some homeade "solids' including, so far pears, avocado, sweet potato, and peaches.

Just wondering
So Ethan has started to do this new thing the past couple of weeks, and I am starting to wonder if it is reflux related. He has been practicing learning to sit up, and has gained a lot of strnegth in his tummy muscles, so with a little support, he can get himself from laying down to sitting. He has been doing this while breastfeeding or taking a bottle. I assumed that he was just excited about his new skill, until he started doing it even during the night time feeds, when I wake him up to feed him. He will be nursing, eyes closed, floppy head, asleep, and all of the sudden he will sit up, without waking, and then settle and go back to nursing.

I know little babies arch when they are in pain, but is this something he might be doing to try to get the reflux to stop? Has anybody else's little one done this? Am I just paranoid?

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Katie only recently learned how to go to a sitting position so I am no help there but she would in her sleep while I was carrying her draw her legs up and then kick. The motion is like if she was in her jumper trying to bounce. She would usually only do it if she was being carried in a certain way so I think it is just them practicing a new skill. Way to sit up Ethan! Katie was 8 mos. old by the time she could do it.

You should ask Melissa about her rendition of Sebastian doing this! hehehe

My vote is that it is normal! Kids will even crawl and walk around in the crib at night when they are learning!

Thanks guys! I just kept thinking about myself trying to settle heartburn when I was pregnant, and I'd always sit up, so I was worrying that maybe he was having more trouble than I thought.
Check with your
doctor first!
