Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
Does your child scream in car seat?
Hi everyone, Matthew is getting better and he finally slept thru the night the 1st time ever about a week ago. We couldn't be more thankful. During the day, he is also happier and plays more. We decided to get out of the house last weekend. We waited 1 hr after his feeding and after his last nap so that he was well-rested. Matthew was screaming every time we stopped at red lights on the 30 min car ride back and forth. He has done that since he was born. So we have been pretty much staying home and rarely go out of the house except going to doctor's offices. I heard that the infant car seat puts pressure on the baby's stomach and many GERDlings do not like being in car seat. Has that happened to your baby? Is it getting better with age? Did you find anything that could soothe the baby in car ride? Thanks a lot for sharing.

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
oh did she ever!!! Still hates them, but it's gotten a little better at 20 months. Forward facing at 12 months seemed to help a little bit of the screaming but not much. giving her toys and sippies and books helped a little bit and classical music seems to calm her sometimes, but mostly if she is going to scream... nothing is going to stop her... *sigh*

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Oh, I hate even thinking about how she used to be! The only thing that soothed her at all was two ringers on my cell phone. Our family is an hour away so, if we went for a visit, we had to play them the entire way there and back. OVER AND OVER AND OVER. It didn't seem to matter if she was full/empty, sleepy/or had just napped.

My friend here can testify that last fall, Maggie screamed for two hours in the car and was not consolable by anything!

I do think it got a little better when we bought a more upright car seat, but she still hated the car. I think some of it with Maggie is personality and some was reflux. She has just recently gotten better but she still doesn't like it very much. I think she's only good bc she thinks we're going to eat :)

Hopefully it will get better for you soon.

ethan's mom
Meridith, mom to Ethan born 4/23/08. Ethan was diagnosed with reflux at about 1 month. He has been on Zantac (unsuccessful) and Prevacid. He is currently taking 7.5 mg of Prevacid 2x per day, with good results. We also suspect MPI, though this hasn't been confirmed by a doctor yet.
Ethan is mostly breastfed, though we are doing one bottle of soy formula each day. We also do some homeade "solids' including, so far pears, avocado, sweet potato, and peaches.

UGGH. . . yes! Ethan has gotten better about this, unless his tummy is full. I hung toys from the carrier bar on the seat, and that seems to keep him busy most of the time.

My niece, not a GERDling, did this until she was almost a year old, and then they talked to the pedi and he said that she might be car sick and told them to turn her around. She immediately stopped crying. I'd be torn about not following the guidelines of having them ride backwards until 1 and 22 pounds, but it worked for them.

Yes, both of my kids have screamed in the car whenever wasn't moving. Maia was the worse of the 2, but the baby isn't much better. With Maia I just didn't leave the house except for Dr. visits for the first 12 months. I can't do that this time around because I have to bring Maia to school and such. I do try to avoid unnecessary trips as much as possible, though. It improved a bit when we went to the upright carseat, and then a lot when we were able to turn the carseat around on her 1st birthday.

Donnie SCREAMED in the car whether the car was moving or stopped it didn't matter. We never did find anything that would console him but it did get better with age. He was around 18 months when he was finally better at riding in the car. Nighttime was a no go unless we just absolutely had to be out at that time. He is now almost 3 years old and is very enjoyable in the car. He carries on coversations and watches other things going on outside the windows. When we do go longer distances we carry a portable dvd player and he loves that. I hope things get better. I know how tough it is not to be able to go out. -Liz

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Katie's car seat is very nicely reclined and sometimes it is the ONLY way I can get her to stop screaming. It is a Chicco if you want to try one out at Babies R Us.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. It's interesting to know some non-GERDling do not like car seat either. I guess time would be the best medicine for us. Hope everyone lol feel better soon.

We always had to wait as long as possible before putting Elyse in the car seat when she was really little....now, when she does puke it is almost always in the carseat. I remember we used to strap her in and as we were strapping, out would come the puke!
Check with your
doctor first!
