Spitting up help
My 9 week old spits up all the time! He's was just diagnosed with reflux and I believe the dr will tell us to put him on Zantac when we go to the pediatrician tomorrow. He's on formula and it seems every one we try, it seems to work miracles for a few days and then about day 4, the spit up starts increasing again. Any suggestions?

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
I have a silent relfuxer (no spitting up.. she swallows it all) but I believe no meds will stop him from spitting up... someone correct me is i am wrong. Do you feed him in a vertical position? Keep him upright for 30 mins after each feeding? Welcome to the club.... sorry you are going through this... reflux stinks big time. But some spitter mom's will have some advice for you! Is he a "happy spitter?" **Jacky

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Medicines won't help with the spit up it just stops the stomach from either producing acid (prevacid) or it lowers the amount of acid produced (zantac). What formulas have you tried and how long are you keeping him on them before you switch? Does he seem to be in pain? Is he spitting up passively (it just comes up like a lot of babies while being burped) or is he vomiting (more forceful, stomach and shoulders involved). Glad you found this site, sorry for the reason behind it!

Thanks for the responses...I'm glad I found the site too- wish I didn't have to! ;) We feed him in a vertical position and keep him upright for more than 30 min afterwards...poor guy...I feel like he'll never learn to do anything because he's aleways being held upright!! Sometimes the spit up bothers him- sometimes it doesn't. He had an upper GI study done and there's no blockage or the PS (that Clay Aiken's baby had).

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
My kid's reflux was silent at first then about 7 mo it became very very loud...and messy...he pukes at LEAST one or two times a day..bad days are 5 or 6...if you have a happy spitter then it wont interfere with growth and he'll be fine. We are on Prevacid and elemental formula. Good luck. With Z it doens't matter how we feed him, sitting position, leaning back, lying down, standing up...if he's gonna puke, he's gonna puke...I've learned to recognize the face and get the towels ready. I only feed him in the kitchen now as it's a heck of a lot easier to clean up!! I hope your son grows out of it quickly!

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
Welcome! My dd was a projectile vomiter for her first 8 or 9 months. We weren't able to find anything to stop it other than time. If the vomiting is not MSPI or allergy related, then you'll probably just have to live with it (sucks, I know) and try to keep his pain under control. If he does end up on Zantac, remember that it's weight sensitive so you'll need to up the dosage as he gains weight. If the Zantac doesn't work, then I would recommend trying a PPI like Prilosec or Prevacid (our miracle drug). How long are you giving the formula and which ones have you tried? If you haven't tried Nutramigen or Alimentum yet, I'd recommend it - the proteins are more broken down than the other formulas. I know it's hard, but try to stay on the formula for 2 weeks, which will allow enough time for hte old formula to leave his system.

Supposedly Reglan will help with the vomiting. It promotes motility. It also has some side effects that are pretty serious for some babies. My son was on it for about 10 days. He was crabby and it didn't help the vomit. He started to show some nurological side effects and I immediately stopped the meds. We had him on nutramigen, thickened with rice cereal, Dr. Brown's bottles with Y shaped nipples. Nothing stopped the vomit. We had 40 bibs and I washed a load daily of bibs and baby clothes. The only thing that finally helped was solids. Not at first but as the formula lessened and the baby food increased, his vomiting became less frequent. By 10 months he was pretty much over the vomit. He spit up a few times after that but that completely stopped by a year old. I can give you laundry tips if you like :) Good luck!
