Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
OT-thoughts and advice please-long but interesting :)
This is a weird situation. I just thought I'd get ideas about how to handle it from my mommy friends.

Just for background sake-My aunt and uncle are very special to me. I would never want to hurt their feelings. They have kept Mags for me a lot lately since my mil is out of commission. They are very "it won't hurt her" minded people. Any way, Mags had diarrhea while she was there and after I got her home over the weekend. She wasn't eating well either. I chalked it up to my aunt giving her juice that wasn't diluted. And that very well could be the problem.

Here's the thing: my aunt has for some reason become, ummmm, overboard with air fresheners. She has a very well kept house and it doesn't ever stink-ever in many years. I don't know why she thinks she needs all these plug in things but it drives me crazy when I'm there. So--she has one over the kitchen counter and one near the table. I felt sorry for Mags eating near one the other day bc it was so strong.

A while back she sent home a bunch of cupcakes. We had to throw them all out because they tasted like, you guessed it, air freshener. Now she fed Mags one of those single serving bowls of fruit loops over the weekend. She sent a handful of leftovers home. GAG-AIR FRESHENER!

I wonder how much stuff Maggie ate over the weekend that was laced with air freshener. I wonder if that's what has caused her diarrhea the two times she has stayed there. I wonder--how do I handle this?

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!

Could you have them stay at your house with Mags? Maybe lie and say that she loves them but with being out of her house for a weekend made her a little clingy and she does better in her own home as a result. I think it is one of those little lies that are meant for good.

My grandmother cannot smell well and she collects everything, stuffed animal by the hundreds. They collect so much dust that my mom and I can't stand to be in one of her bedrooms since you can actually see the layer of dust. We get an allergy attack from a few hours visiting. I wonder what we will do when we are older? My MIL wanted new carpeting but their sliding door needed to be fixed first so she ripped up the carpeting herself (w/o removing heavy objects so not ALL of the carpeting is gone) and now they just have subflooring 3 years later. They don't understand why we don't want to be our crawling daughter over to visit.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Why don't you tell her that Mags seems to have problems with fragrances--like a sensitivity? I actually DO have that problem. Ask her if she'd mind unplugging them the day before Mags arrives because they are starting to bother her. It's not rude...it is health related!

I agree with Melissa...just be honest about the air fresheners

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Man, this is tough, since they're so special to you. Why is it so hard to be honest with the ones you love about bad things? I guess I'd have to agree with Melissa (Seb's mom) with telling them there's a fragrance sensitivity. My dad's EXTREMELY allergic to anything with alcohol, even perfume will make him ill, so there's definitely some validity to the concern.

Well, I have odd family (not my parents though) so my first thought was to lie. If you don't have that kind of relationship I *guess* the truth might work. LOL!

Hey, truth/lie, I don't care :) As long as it doesn't hurt her feelings. My mom said to just casually say "you know, those fruit loops tasted like air freshener". I should have told her when I had to throw the cupcakes away but I had hoped it'd be a one time thing :(
Check with your
doctor first!
