Our 1 year old daughter has silent reflux, hypotonia as well as benign external hydrocephalus. We are currently weaning onto whole milk (we'll see if it works) and she is also on Prevacid 15mg per day.
Is constipation reflux related?
I just don't understand why Keira is always fighting being constipated. Even when she was on Nutram she would get constipated. It's beyond me.

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
If I'm remembering right, constipation can cause reflux to flare. I always imagined it like this...if the waste isn't going out like it should then it's pushing stuff back out the other end. That might not be a "pretty" explanation. That's just how I imagine it.

Yes, it slows the motility, you empty slower. Chronic Constipation can actually CAUSE reflux. But Reflux does not cause constipation, make sense? I have 2 with Chronic Constipation. In their case it's a slow transit dysmotility. Food Intolerance/Allergy can also cause it as well as medications. Not getting enough fluid or fiber can cause it. Have you tried a maintenance med, like miralax?

Yeah she takes Miralax when it gets bad but the GI isn't real thrilled about using it all the time. I think I'll call them about all this. It's just never ending.

Elyse took miralax daily from 4 mos to 13 mos. If we forgot it, she did not go. We started at 1/3 capful (if I remember right, it was about 1.5 tsp) and weaned down slowly all the way to 1/2 tsp and then stopped it when she started eating solid fruits. For some reason juice and fruit puree did not do it for her. It is not habit forming, and all 3 of her drs agreed she needed it.

It is absorbed by the body, and she can take as much as needed as long as it doesnt cause diarrhea. # of my kids are on it, and have been for a long time. It works well, and is safe for daily use to prevent problems

My oldest didn't have reflux but has a milk intolerance. She has been dealing with constipation since she was 1yo. She is now 7.5. She has been on Miralax since she was 2yo. We are still trying to wean her off of it. She is down to 1tsp per day. It is def safe and helps greatly. I have started Abby on it in the last 2 months. She is on 1 1/4 tsp per day and it is greatly helping her.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Can you ask you MD about supplementing magnesium? This did a great deal in helping both the constipation AND her disposition (it increases intestinal motility while calming the CNS.) When on antacids and PPI's for extended periods, the body's ability to uptake Mg is inhibited, which is why in a lot of antacids you'll see Mg as a main ingredient.
