constipation
Hi Ladies-Nicholas has been on the neocate for one week and is beginning to get constipated. I know others have experienced this with thier los. I believe someone mentioned Miralax. How do you know how much to give your lo and what has anyone else used? I was thinking of introducing prunes or prune juice, but am nervous as we haven't introduced anything but cereal so far. What do you all think?

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!

Is he going less or are they little hard pebble turds? Katie started going less once she had cereal but when she would go they were mostly normal. She also has a different frequency with what type of formula/breastmilk she takes.

According to one pediatrician sugar water is supposed to do the same thing as prunes or juice. Nothing worked for us in regards to liquids for Katie. Juice just made her reflux so bad that she won't drink anything sweet so when she gets constipated we have to do a few days of apricots and prunes.

He is going much less (quantity) and it is getting harder. Not pebble yet-but seems to be getting that way.

Prune juice never worked for Meggy till she was over 1 year. For Miralax, We started with 1/2 of a teaspoon and worked our way up to as much as she needed (3 tablespoons) We always try to introduce new things slowly and give the absolute least medicine possible.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
We had rock hard black pebbles on neocate that we had to pull out of her, even with administering Babylax (don't ask - it's gross). Once we introduced prunes, it took about a week and she started doing much better. Also did the probiotics to help get things going, which also had the added benefit of reducing the reflux. We did a daily serving of prunes until she FINALLY started to go on her own, around 5 months. She was constipated from 1 week to then.

I'd say try a little bit of prunes mixed with the cereal and watch carefully for reaction. Prune juice did nothing, since it has to be diluted due to sugar content. Ask your ped what they recommend. Apricots do also get things moving, if you don't want to try the prunes. We actuallt did cereal, then sweet potatoes, then out of desperation went straight to prunes next.
