Our 1 year old daughter has silent reflux, hypotonia as well as benign external hydrocephalus. We are currently weaning onto whole milk (we'll see if it works) and she is also on Prevacid 15mg per day.
MPI, Lactose Intolerant, Virus?!? What is happening?!?
So Tuesday I started whole milk. We did two bottles of milk and two of her Similac Sensitive formula. No issues. Wednesday-same thing. Thursday I literally could not find Similac Sensitive anywhere in the stores... It can be hard to find for some reason. Anyway I did a whole day of whole milk. I noticed she had some really loud gas even though she didn't seem phased by it. She did have a huge dirty diaper but it wasn't runny. It was a different color-almost like a tannish gold color which I've never seen before. Today she pooped twice-soft goldish color. She had more gas but again didn't bother her. Then she pooped again and it was runny. My MIL was over and of course has all the answers so while she was here I called the pedi GI nurse. Well she always seems so confused by us for whatever reason. She kept saying she didn't know what the "issue" was. I just wanted to know if I could put some of those lactose drops in her bottle or put her on Lactaid to see if that would help her. Then she was like well yeah you could. Then she calls me back and says "are you sure it's not a milk protein issue?". I said "Well doesn't Similac Sensitive have the regular milk protein in it? If so she handled it ok." She said yes it does. OK THEN WHY ASK ME IF IT'S MPI?!? She said that lactose intolerance is very rare. I thought-well so is Benign External Hydrocephalus but Keira has it! She says she's going to talk to the doctor about whether or not Keira needs to be tested for the lactose sensitivity or MPI. So my question if you got this far is- can stools change color like to a golden color w/ the different type of milk you're using? Do you think this could be a reaction to the milk or could she maybe just have a little bug? She's been in a good mood today. I don't know if this even makes sense...I'm pretty tired. I don't know whether or not to just keep trialing the milk and if it's worse tomorrow then go back to formula till I hear from the GI.... Maybe I'm just over paranoid....maybe she 's just adjusting to the milk....who knows.

I should add that Wednesday I gave her Miralax because she had not gone in three days and if she did "go" it was hard pebbles. So maybe the Miralax combined w/ the whole milk sorta screwed up her bowels? I dunno. :(

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
I think it is just her system getting used to the new food. Their stools definitely change in relation to the solids they eat. My GF's son took 2 weeks to stop being constipated from milk. Coy got constipated for one day as well then started having just those big pasty poops . Any color of brown & green is normal.. coy's have been all ranges of colors from light brown to golden to dark. Totally normal. Oh, and coy pooped 5 times in one day about 3 days after I started him on milk.. but it hasn't happened since.

Thank you! That's good to hear. Yes pasty is exactly what I'm dealing with. Not to mention the last one being loose but that was after FOUR poopy diapers so... I gave her some yogurt to help balance her out a little. When I'm overtired my anxiety peaks and when I think we're getting over a hump I get so worried something will screw it up... :P

Chris: Mom to Rayna Marie our little miracle born June 13, 2007. 7lbs 12oz. Diagnosed with GERD after ph probe at 5 weeks. Current weight 21lbs 8 oz. Prevacid 8ml in a.m. 2% milk
When Rayna went on whole milk her poo was firm or pasty. The nurse said we could either do whole or 2% milk. We switched to 2% and her poo seemed to be less firm, so I don't know if it was the change in milk or her system got use to the switch from formula. If her poo gets hard now or she doesn't go for a day, I give her a Fiber One yogurt.

i think it is just because of the switch in "food". if she seems unphased by the gas and everything I wouldn't worry about it. :)

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
I agree it's probably her system getting used to the new "food". When H went on milk, she was pooping up to 4x a day (from 1x a day) - was so tired of changing dirty diapers. Once she was on milk for a while, the frequency started to diminish and we're back to 1 or 2 per day. The consistency is usually pretty firm now, but I remember it changing quite a bit at first from the Nutramigen stools. I'd give her a week or two to see if she evens out (particularly if it's not really bothering her).
