b's mom
another question for you expert moms...
hi ladies, thank you all for your advice last week regarding my daughter, brynn. for the past 6 days, brynn has been lactose free and we've been supplementing with Solaray Baby Life Powder (a lactose-free probiotic). she's also on 15 mg of prevacid per day. i have been splitting the solutab and she gets half of the tablet one hour before lunch and the other half one hour before dinner. so, in the past 6 days, i have seen a big improvement in the reflux. she hasn't had any vomity spit up (even after eating sloppy joes at daycare...i can't believe they fed her that after i had asked that she not have anything dairy or acidic foods(especially tomatoes)) and i think in general she seems less stressed. less irritated. probably because she's not as uncomfortable anymore. anyway, life should be good, right? well, she continues to wake up at night. she was up fri, sat, tues, and wed. all between 1:30 and 4. she wakes up crying and then is very uncomfortable and very gassy. you can hear her abdomen making noises and then she lets one rip. or more than one. and it's only then that she settles down and can fall back asleep. so, my questions for you guys: is gas a side-effect of prevacid? of the probiotics? is this part of lactose intolerance? does she maybe have another food intolerance? allergy? should i do an elimination diet? and then the other part of me wonders: is this just a pattern now since she used to be woken up by the reflux? she's used to waking up at that time now and we're going to have to ferberize her to get her back on a normal sleep schedule? i thought we were making some headway with the reflux, but now i'm really beginning to wonder if there isn't something else going on. unless this is just toddler behavior. i'm happy that the reflux seems to be improving, but we all continue to lose sleep over here.

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
lordy i cant help you there... joslyn is a professional ripper!!!!! with or w/o prevacid!

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
My brother has lactose issues and he gets very painful gas and bloating when he has any. I'm not sure if you're aware, but the solutabs have a small amount of lactose in them. I think I'd try to rule out other things first, but if you've gone through everything else, then the solutabs may be the culprit.

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
I think Donessa told you about the Prevacid which was one thing i was going to bring up. It could be the little amount of lactose could be hurting her. I would try a different med that doesn't have the lactose and see if that works as well. You might notice a big difference with cutting out the lactose and limiting her diet without the meds even. Just a thought. I hope things get better. -Amanda

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
We all do get gas occassionally, but the probiotics help the intestines work more functionally. Thus, this can cause some digestive issues until you get to a maintanence level with them. Also, check ALL the ingredients in the probiotics - they sometimes sneak an allergen in there, like soy or gelatin. I have the website of a very hypoallergenic probiotic site.

I agree about the solutabs and lactose - it's minimal, but if she's sensitive, that could be it too.

I'd try an elimination diet first, then start to worry about the solutabs. Just remember that since these kids have a sensitive system to begin with, it doesn't take too much to set them off. HUGS to you
