Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
Experience with Zegerid?
We switched Matthew to Prilosec a week ago but reflux is still there. Sigh!!! He had problem sleeping (possibly due to headache) while on Prevacid, which has improved significantly since we switched to Prilosec. But now he refuses to eat and cry at feedings, typical reflux symptoms. He used to take 5.5 oz before, now he takes only 3 oz and then arches his back and cries. We are lucky to get 4.5oz into him. Can Prilosec possibly slow down his digestion? The GI mentioned to me about Zegerid at the last visit and I will call and ask him about trying it tomorrow. If you have had experience with Zegerid, please share with me. Is it working on your son/daughter? Any side effect? Since it's FDA approved for children 18yrs or older, I'm worried if it has serious side effects on young children. Thanks a lot for sharing.

My dd was on Zegerid for awhile. She didn't do well on it for two reasons. (1) she was on the 20mg packet. When I mixed it up she would spit out b/c of the salty taste (sodium bicarbonate). So Dr. Phillips (from Marci-Kids) who helped dev Zegerid said to try mixing it with Mylanta Cherry Sup. This gave her diarrhea. So we were in a no win situation and we went back to Prevacid. I do know some people that use Tums to mix with the Zegerid and this helps with the taste and doesn't cause diarrhea. Zegerid and Prilosec are basically the same drug (omeprazole) but they added sodium bicarbonate to the Zegerid. I know lots of lo's on Zegerid that have great success. You can find more info on Zegerid at www.marci-kids.com Andrea

Forgot to add that they add the sodium bicarb as a buffer so you don't have to worry about timing it around eating or an empty stomach. Which is nice for los.

I don't have a lot of time, but we use zegerid and it has worked wonderfully for my dd. It is salty but she takes it easily w/o complaint.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Hello! We had a rough time with Prilosec...I really DO think it slowed down Sebastian's digestion (that is when the vomiting at night started...never really stopped). We use Prevacid and are as happy as I think we will be on meds, but I really wish Zegerid had worked for us. I just couldn't get him to take the large a quantity at a time, but I know Aubrey does extremely well on it. Jennifer will be a great resource!!!

Elyse was on it for a short time. We hated it bc once you mix it with water, it is quite a lot of liquid to get them to take. Also it needs to be refrigerated, so it was a pain when we were out (although, now, we always have a lunchbag with ice packs with us anyway for her food!)

I was able to talk to the nurse only and she talked me into staying with Prilosec for at least another week. I have no other choice. Yes I think Prilosec slows down Matthew's digestion, esp. in the evening. And constipation is another problem. She told me to use Milk of Magnesium on a daily basis but I am not sure if that is good and causes dependency. I really wish Prevacid worked but Matthew couldn't sleep well and had diarrhea with blood in his stool during the 1st week he was on it. The GI think Prevacid is not good for him. Well, we'll continue with Prilosec for now and hope he can eat better. Thanks everyone for your feedback.
