I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
Joslyn GI Appt update... not too good
well. Add Joslyn to the slow weight gain label! I am just so upset. She has gained NOTHING in one month. She is 12 lbs 5 ounces and still 24.5 inches long. Her GI doc says that she has poor weight gain (not failure to thrive... yet) and he says we need to supplement with about 2-3 ounces of a breastmilk bottle after each feeding. She gained 5 ounces after that weigh in and after I fed her there. But I guess that does not count as a total weight. He feels it is a calorie intake problem and he wants us to try to give her an extra bit of BM in a bottle after each feeding. He said that we may want to think about waking her at night to feed her an extra time. But we dont want to do that yet. We fiqure if we add 2 ounces to each feeding that will be atleast one extra feeding in a day. We can give her 1 serving of cereal now. but he said it is such a low calorie food that it wont help her gain weight. We have to go back to him in 3 weeks. If she is not gaining weight at thta point then he said we may do tests to see what is going on. He is not concerned about how she looks as she looks very healthy. Joslyn was starring at him the whole time he was talking! He stopped a few times to look at her and he laughed! He said he just loves her, and loved how she looked at him the whole time! It was like she was listening to what she needed to do in order to gain weight. He took her off Prevacid, as we told him about her behavior. He said it may not be the meds, but her age. However he said that we can do Zantac again... but this time do 1 ml 3 times a day. If this helps her behavior then it was the prevacid maybe giving her headaches. If no change then it is her age... only wanting mommy..... not sleeping as well... blah blah blah. I dont know what to do! She has not gained weight nor has she gotten any longer! He said that we may need to pump every feeding so we know what she is taking in. I do not mind that at all. I am just stubborn enough not to give formula. However if I have to then I will. But we are wanting that to be the last resort. As well as the last resort to wake her in the middle of the night to fed her. He said he normally says to let babies sleep and not to wake them... but he said in Joslyn's case that may not be an option... later down the road. So bottom line? Still 12 lbs 5 ounces, 24.5 inches long. Still in 0-3 month clothing (3-6 fit but big) still in size 1 diapers.... still crying at the moment cause I put her down as she was asleep..... and she is 5.5 months old! looks like she is in the 3-5% for weight. OH FUN! **JAcky

ethan's mom
Meridith, mom to Ethan born 4/23/08. Ethan was diagnosed with reflux at about 1 month. He has been on Zantac (unsuccessful) and Prevacid. He is currently taking 7.5 mg of Prevacid 2x per day, with good results. We also suspect MPI, though this hasn't been confirmed by a doctor yet.
Ethan is mostly breastfed, though we are doing one bottle of soy formula each day. We also do some homeade "solids' including, so far pears, avocado, sweet potato, and peaches.

((hugs))

I hope that the additional breast milk will work for you guys. It seems like it will be a lot of work for you, but if it works, I'm sure it will be worth it.

Hang in there. :)

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
I'm sorry....it's so stressful to have weight issues to worry about on top of everything else, isn't it? I want to support you in your desire to provide Joslyn with breastmilk -- as you said, if formula is necessary, so be it, but we often don't get a lot of encouragement through the tough times with breastfeeding and pumping, and, after 17 months of struggling on through it all, I gotta say, WE NEED THE ENCOURAGEMENT! And it is worth it, if her weight can be maintained. There are some amazing stages of interaction that occur while breastfeeding through developmental stages, and it is a real gift to be able to experience them...

katiesmommy
Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!

Hi! What makes you think the Prevacid is giving her headaches? When Katie was getting headaches from Zantac she woke up in a great mood and then 20 minutes after getting zantac she cried non-stop. Picking her up did nothing to comfort her, she would scream harder because mommy wasn't making it better. Then she started to pull her hair HARD like she was trying to pull it out and hitting her head against anything that was close by. Once she stopped zantac those behaviors stopped but it took 6 more weeks for the Prevacid to work so they were hard weeks!

At that age Katie stopped being a good napper. She always napped on me and I would nap with her and at that age she would wake up so easily. I use to be able to use the restroom while holding her and then if I would yawn it would wake her up. We got very black out curtains for her room so that she would think it was night. I think they do become more light sensitive at that age because that really seemed to help! Without the curtains cio did no good b/c she knew it was daytime but afterwards she would only cry for a few minutes and then go out.

Katie has gained a pound in 6 months so we understand how scary and frustraiting it is to have a baby not gain weight! Hugs!

We were told about Ultracare while in Maryland. It is a medical food and has to be ordered online. Every scoop/serving is 130 calories. It is free of corn, soy, dairy, and gluten.

The office u r seeing also had a doc. to tell us when Megan was in the hospital at 4 months old that her problems were behavioral. Turns out they may all be allergy.

I think Meggy was always more clingy and wanting Mommie when she was hurting.
Not saying your doc is wrong, but rather something to consider.

thanks everyone! It will be some extra work... but I have a pretty good supply of BM in the freezer... and DH can give the extra bottle when he is home (we hope that will help Joslyn be more into daddy when she is sleepy and hungry) Thanks Meridith! Lorenzomama: it can be troubling bfing. I can't just pass my boobs to DH when I am sleepy or when I need a break. But I think Joslyn would have gotten sick many times if she did not have the benefits of bm. I myself had a bad cold last month and she did not catch it! So yes encouragement is WONDERFUL! DH says to people (infront of me and not) that BFing takes alot of work! and he is proud of me for keeping with it. Like I said before I think I am just that stubborn. hehe. 17 months! WOWZERS! You are super mommy! Tracey: I do not know if she is getting headaches. Her GI Doc mentioned that. We know sleep problems can be a side effect too. She just really wants mommy. She will be screaming BLOODY MURDER with daddy, he will be at his whits end from not being able to make her happy.... then I come in pick her up and she looks at him and smiles! Happens every time!!!!!!!! Tell me our 5 month old does not have us whipped! Lord 1 lb in 6 months?! man... Engin: Thanks for that info. I am happy you go to the same GI place as us. It is something to consider. Why is it that she is wonderfully happy with me? Is it that she wants me that much.. or is it more? I dont know! Wish I had answers.... like us all! Thanks again everyone! We are gonna try cereal tonight! Gonna get it on video! Jacky

From my experience with DH and Meggy, I watch closely because we have the same problem. My DH gets frustrated quickly. He feels at lost and helpless and that he has failed her as a daddy when she hurts and he can't help.

I think Meggy picks up on those frustrations and anxiety. Where as a mommies, we take things as they come and adjust. She probably senses that u feel confident as a mommie.

Just guessing. These have been some of my observations with Meggy. She can be gulping and screaming and DH looks like he wants to scream. I pick her up and she stops.

This makes DH feel bad and he thinks that she doesn't like him, or that he has done something wrong.

Also, when Meggy was 3 months, her Pedi suggested Human Milk fortifier. You can find it online and it is pricey but I think it is meant as an addition to BF.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
HI. I hope my comments help. As you know I have a little man myself. At 12 mo. (11 mo. adjusted) he weighs 17.5 pounds. He gains weight slowly as well. However, I look at our genetics. My husband can eat a horse and not gain an ounce. He has the best metabolism on the planet-seriously. From 10-11 months coyle didnt gain an ounce. not a single ounce. The GI was worried; I was worried; the pedi was worried. Just a bunch of worried people! He gained 2 pounds then next month! And, is now on the 3%. He has never, ever been on the charts.

Josyln is in the 3rd to 5th percentile for weight & the 10th-25th percentile for length. Personally, I think this is good. Esp. because you've said that you are a tiny person yourself. I was super, super worried about coy's size until I met the neighbor baby. She is the same size as him @ 13 mo. and her mom is a NICU nurse. She walks, talks, and is a major genius. But tiny. Her mom is like 5 feet and 100 pounds wet. Makes sense...

As far as giving her a bottle of breastmilk that might be a good idea as long as you are okay with it and to see just how much she really is eating. Maybe try it for three days or something? But, you would think that if she was hungry she would probably want to nurse more often. I also disagree with the waking to feed, jmho. For my reflux baby eating at night always, always made his reflux worse. I fed him, ofcourse!, because he is so tiny. However, he woke on his own to eat. And, I always held him for 30 min. afterward. Anyway, if she was hungry you'd think she would wake. When is her last feeding of the night? And, does she wake at all? THey grow when they are sleeping :)

if they've given you the go on cereal then good luck. It made coy's reflux way, way worse so i really hope this does not happen to her. If you want to pass on the cereal bananas and avocados are great first foods. And, great for putting on weight!

They get a spurt @ around 6 mo. so maybe she'll grow next month and surprise you.

good luck! you are doing great!

Oh bless you!!!!! I am not the tiniest person. I am 5"8 and was 160 before I got preggers with Joslyn. But when I was a baby I was very pettite. I think I weigh what I do as I was a dancer for many years and my legs show it. I do not know my history as a baby since my fam and I do not speak (long sad story). But the few pics I have I am very tiny. I can still touch my thumb to my pinky around my wrists. (almost) She gets her last feeding at 9:30 pm. She stays alseep all night has been since she was 2 weeks old. She gets enough ounces wise.... but the GI doc thinks not enough calories is going in. She seems to get enough in to sustain her. But that is about it. So we will try this new feeding plan and see if that works. (fingers crossed) I think we will be buying a bottle warmer for the car for when we are away from home during a feeding. She LOVED the cereal last night and she did not seemed bothered by it. She slept all night without a problem. And for the first time she did not finish all of her morning BM bottle! We offer 5 ounces and she took just over 4.5 of it. And that was forced! She kept on playing with it at about 4 ounces. She is mad right now I have to get her. Jacky

He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
That's great that she did OK on the cereal!!!!!!
