Green Poop
I am sorry to be a post hog today. Aidan has been having some serious green poop. Sometimes mucousy, sometimes not. He normally never has green poop. I know it could be from the sickness and it seriously smells so foul. I know we talk poop way too much on here but can green poop mean anything else other then a viral illness?

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
green poop investigation....
Dont know if this will help but I found this....... Green Poop I have consulted with a doctor, a physiologist and a microbiologist on this question, and the following summarizes their answers: Healthy people can have green poop if they eat a diet rich in leafy green vegetables, or if they consume large quantities of food coloring (in ice cream, cake frosting etc.). Green poop can also be caused by excess iron in the diet, from dietary supplements, for example. If the body does not absorb all the iron consumed, the iron may stain the poop green, the color of iron (II) salts. Ordinarily, the green color may be masked by the normal brown poop color, but if digestion is thrown off by illness so that bilirubin is less concentrated in the intestine, the green color may become apparent. This can happen when a person is afflicted with diarrhea. Green poop in sick babies may come from iron in baby formula not being properly absorbed, or by green pigments in bile salts (again, green from iron). found it on http://www.heptune.com/poop.html Jacky

Mom (Danie) to Adam (9-4-03) & Nate (3-7-07) Nate was diagnosed with silent AR at 2 months old. He was on neocate, prevacid 30mg per day and couldn't start solids till he was almost 8 months old. He started cow's milk at 14 months and is currently off all meds!! So far so good :) PIC: Disney trip 2008. Nate didn't know Piglet was there, he didn't like the characters too much.
stickybean- This was very helpful to me. I STILL look at every one of Nate's poopy diapers...practically disecting it (gross, I know) when will I stop??

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Hmmm....Sebastian ALWAYS has forest green poop except for when he has diarrhea (like now, from his Augmentin. Then it's brown.). I don't think it's a big deal - Jacky seems to have more knowledge than me, though!

How can you not look at it? When your wiping it you really have no choice. I can't believe the different array of colors it can come in. Jacky's explanation makes sence. Hopefully he feels better soon.

Green mucusy poop may be a sign of food intolerance, a viral (rotavirus)or bacterial infection(giardia and cdiff come to mind, they make it stinky too) or SIBO(small bowel bacterial overgrowth), sometimes can be normal. Brent's is always green/mucusy/bloody, green is because of elemental formula, it is so broken down and doesnt go through the normal digestion process, so it retains more bile, blood and mucus in his case is from colits. Im thinking it's from the virus since it isnt his normal, especially since it's mucusy.

Thanks ladies. This all makes me feel better. I think it is just that he isn't eating much so he is having elemental formula poop. I forget that it makes everything green when there isn't other food being eaten. I am sure the virus isn't helping either. You guys are the best.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Well Jessica stole my thiunder...LOL

Melissa, green poo on an elemental formula is considered normal. I woudn't worry about it. Jedd's was always green when he was on Alimentum as well as all the other kiddos i know who are on it too.

Mary, if the green poo is really really stink, and I mena really bad, It could very well be rotovirus. That would expalin why he is refluxing as of late as well.

Check with your
doctor first!
