lost and stressed
my baby girl i guess has been a happy spitter with good wieght gain intill about 3 weeks ago and she started having painful cries and crunching up in a ball the dr just keeps switching formula tomorrow we r to start tryin a 4th formula i'm passed believing its the formula she cant tolorate more than 4 oz at a time when 3 weeks ago she was eating 6-8 oz a feeding and still acting hungry after tlking with a friend at work she said something about acid reflux i done some research and found this site her symptoms seem to fit but i dont know how to convince her dr that it isnt the formula and my once happy lil piglet all of sudden cant tolerate food or all of sudden she became colicikly like i have been told the last four times i have taken her in i even packed her up in one of her screaming fits and took her in so they could see what i was talking about they said to decrease her food to maybe 2 or 3 oz at a time but she just cries when that bottle is gone because she is still hungry but if i give her to much she cries in pain i'm amazed by the parents on here because i feel like i'm hangin on by a thread i work thrid shift full time because her daddy got let go do to cut backs. (THIS WEEK I HAVE CALLED OFF 4 DAYS DUE TO LACK OF SLEEP AND NOT WANTING TO LEAVE HER SINCE SHE LIKES TO SLEEP ON MOMMY) OK I COULD GO ON FOREVER WITH MY ?S AND CONCERNS BUT I'M HOPING FOR SOME ANSWERS TODAY WHEN WE GO BACK IN BECAUSE SHE IS GETTING WORSE

ethan's mom
Meridith, mom to Ethan born 4/23/08. Ethan was diagnosed with reflux at about 1 month. He has been on Zantac (unsuccessful) and Prevacid. He is currently taking 7.5 mg of Prevacid 2x per day, with good results. We also suspect MPI, though this hasn't been confirmed by a doctor yet.
Ethan is mostly breastfed, though we are doing one bottle of soy formula each day. We also do some homeade "solids' including, so far pears, avocado, sweet potato, and peaches.
Well, let me start off by welcoming you. I'm glad that you found the boards, but sorry that you've needed to.

I don't have a lot of advice to offer, but it sounds like it could be reflux, or it could be intolerances to formula, or both. I assume since you didn't say anything, she isn't on any meds. My pedi said something like 40% of her infants are on Zantac, so I think that you could probably convince your doctor to try it.

Other ideas include feeding her upright, sitting her up for 30 to 45 minutes after eating, and increasing the number of smaller feedings.

My little guy is just a week older than your baby, so I'm thinking that elevated sleeping won't work without one of the Tucker Sling deals, since she is probably moving around quite a bit.

I'm sure that others will join in with more information. I can empathize with the 3rd shift work, though I am not doing it right now. It's hard by itself, without lack of sleep and being stressed by a hurting baby. ((hugs))

Mom (Danie) to Adam (9-4-03) & Nate (3-7-07) Nate was diagnosed with silent AR at 2 months old. He was on neocate, prevacid 30mg per day and couldn't start solids till he was almost 8 months old. He started cow's milk at 14 months and is currently off all meds!! So far so good :) PIC: Disney trip 2008. Nate didn't know Piglet was there, he didn't like the characters too much.
Hi there. Welcome. I am up because my lil won't stop screaming for some reason :(

We were all in your shoes. You will find the support you need here. My son went thru numerous formulas and meds before we got it right. Unfortunately, he had to go thru so much for us to finally find what worked.

I found that him sleeping in the car seat or swing worked best in the beginning. Like you, my baby slept best on me too. Nate arched up and squirmed during feedings. When he was done, I couldn't tell if he wanted more, or if he over ate. Finally, he ended up on 30mg of prevacid (split between am and pm) and neocate formula. We had a very understanding pediatrician which helps.

Well, I know the other moms can help you more. I am not in the right frame of mind right now so forgive me, lol. Best of luck at the dr today. I always had a long list of questions to ask. I would be prepared to explain what her stools look like, if she coughs/gags during feedings. Prevacid worked for us but it does take a few weeks to "kick in". You are a great mom, you are doing everything you should. We will all give you the support you need right now :)

Zoo Boo Trick-or-Treating (pic).
Welcome to the boards. My little guy was also a happy spitter. We never got to the point of food refusal though. Probably because he got treatment early and responded to it well. He was just on Zantac until a year then on Prevacid for 6 months after that. He was also MSPI and on Nutramigen since about 8 weeks old. It sounds like she is experiencing A/R. I acutally videotaped my son in the midst of an "epoisode" as we used to refer to them. This convinced the doctor to give us the Zantac. He was greatly improved but he was still suffering so I took him to a Ped GI. He doubled his script and that made all the difference. Zantac is very weight sensitive but it worked really well for my LO. I'd say if your insurance allowes it, make an appointment with a GI. There is usually a waiting list so make the appt asap. Also, ask your doctor for medication for your child. Lastly, if you ped doesn't listen to you, look for another doctor. Your LO should be in that kind of pain.

Hello and Welcome. Not sure I'm much help. A lot of parents on here have dealt with docs that wouldn't listen and there is nothing wrong with seeing someone else for a second opinion. If you can't get answers from you doc., I'd see someone who will listen. I don't believe in Colic. I believe that baby isn't going to scream for no reason for so long. There has to be something else wrong. Good luck with the doctor today. Keep us posted.

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
Welcome to the site. I know that you will find lots of support here. The hard thing about reflux is there are no two cases that are exactly alike. Even if you have a great ped who will listen to you it is still hard to diagnose reflux in an infant and get the meds right. Keep fighting, you know what is best. Always listen to your instincts they are usually correct.

Adriane was fine at the hospital and then when we brought her home 3 days later it started for us. They switched our formula 5 times before we ended up in the hospital for dehydration and feeding issues. It very well could be the formula. We ended up on Neocate and then 6 months later she grew intolerant to that. So, it can happen. If her system is that sensitive she could have gotten some stomach bug or anything and developed a sensitivity or something to that particular formula.

We started on zantac as well as others and finally trived Prevacid 30 mg (split AM and PM) and that seemed to help. Right now we are trying to go without meds and doing okay. Regulating the diet. Well, it is easy when the doc takes her off all food except formula.

I hope that you get some good info at the doc. Just keep fighting for your lo. You are their only voice. -Amanda

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
God, I am so sorry this is going on, but I am happy you found us. These ladies have been saviors for me and my son. you will get good advice,

It certainly sounds like acid reflux to me. DO NOT TAKE COLIC AS AN ANSWER....we were told my son had colic even when his face was a red, scaly mess, he puked 15 times a day, and he screamed around the clock. We tried for several months to decrease the amount of formula he was taking, but honestly, nothing (and I mean NOTHING) worked for us but Prevacid and Neocate. What kind of formula is she on? Have you tried Alimentum or Nutramigen? Your daughter might have milk protein intolerance or even an allergy like so many babies on here. Actually, reflux and MPI are closely linked.

How is your ped with giving referrals? We have found that our ped does greta with the basic ear infection stuff, but when it comes to allergies and reflux, he knows we are out of his he is more than willing to send us to specialists. Any chance you can see a GI or allergist?

Hi Welcome-Sorry you have had to find us but glad you did! I was told my lo had colic too. I'm convinced that colic is what they label anything that they can't figure out. Once my lo was on the prevacid the "colic" mysteriously went away. Not to say he doesn't fuss and he still has reflux issues but the arching and extreme crying stopped just a few weeks after the prevacid and I don't think it's a coincidence. Be persisitent in finding a doctor who will listen to you. If your reg. pedi won't, get a referral to a pedi GI. They are more used to dealing with reflux and are more apt to understand your concerns and your babies needs. Good luck!!! We are all here if you have questions.

Mom to Ian, 3/1/07
Used Zantac - 1.0 ml twice a day
Weaned at 1 year
Back on Zantac at 15 months
Hi! The only things I can add are that if your doctor isn't acknowledging a problem, try another doc. Colic doesn't cut it for an answer in my book. Also, tummy pain sounds to me like maybe gas. Have you tried Gentlease formula? Target makes a generic that is less expensive and it worked for us. Good luck!
Sep 24, 2008
