Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Sebastian has a new allergy to add to the endless list...
Yup. We lost latex this week. Now, I can't say I am 100% sure because we obviously weren't tested, but I have seen my child react 1,456 times, so I feel pretty good (well, pretty bad) about this one.

My husband decided to paint our lovely bathroom in our lovely new house flourescent green (read: Nickelodeon slime green) this week, and he wore latex gloves during the dirty work. At a stopping point, he washed his hands, cam edown, and picked Sebastian up by his arms and swung him all around the room like a monkey. Within SECONDS (not exaggerating here), his arms had finger-shaped bright red marks everywhere that Larry touched him...and then I saw the hives. Now, we get at least two or three solo hives about four days a week (usually don't know why), but this was like 20 of them. And they were BIG. I wouldn't be so convinced it was latex if the marks weren't glove finger shaped!

Also, Sebastian is severely, severely allergic to bananas, and a huge percentage of people with banana allergies are allergic to latex. We were tested for latex in early May before Sebastian had the banana reaction, and we were negative. But I guess now that he has been exposed to banana, it is showing up. Let me just tell you how scared I am about what else is going to show up on our tests when we do go for Round 4 in 2009.

Sebastian also had bloody ear wax today and he has been a butt all week - (I posted a longer, colorful version of this under the "Sickies" thread), so I took him to Nighttime Pediatrics even though all of my friends but mom2coy (we text!) told me, it was teething....well, turns out he has a double ear infection. So we can't tell if the recent jump in Prevacid is helping or not because he is soooooo uncomfortable.

Sigh. I am praying we don't have problems with Augmentin because S had a bad reaction to his last antibiotic (Omnicef...another reason we will remain Neocate only for much longer....). I'll take diarrhea!!

Oh no! That is not good at all. This might seem a really silly question, but I really don't know. Does this mean he will have problems with latex paint. Like touching walls and what not?

How did u discover the doggie allergy? We have a dog. I hope Meggy is not allergic to Abby! She absolutely adores her doggie. She was just asking about her today.

Sounds like Sebastian has had a really tough time. He is such a cutie pie. If it is there, I missed it. Does he have sensitivity to corn? I am guessing probably not if he is using Neocate as sole nutrition.

Hope he feels better soon. Also did he use an NG tube? I am wondering if they are latex.

Hi Engin - nope, no tubes here, thank goodness. But I did not even THINK of the latex paint. I really don't know. I started reading about latex allergies but stopped when I saw that one site suggested we avoid grocery check-out conveyor belts, rubber remote control buttons, and electrical cords. I mean, REALLY. So I'll just add that to my list for the allergist instead.

As for the dog, Sebastian tested positive for it on both the skin and RAST tests. He also has had constant congestion (makes him puke full bottles) pretty much since birth. This is obviously because of a million things, but we suspected it was the dog, too. In our old condo (we in late July), we had carpet and the dog. We vacuumed very frequently, but once Bassy started crawling, he always had hives on his feet, knees and legs ( ALL the time). He wold also rub his eyes constantly, so they were always red. We figured he was rubbing the dog dander right into them (by this point, we had the positive tests, though). We ended up moving and putting down all hardwood and pergo in our new place, and we vacuum, sweep, and swiffer daily. His favorite activity is chasing the dog and grabbing her, so I basically follow him around with a package of wipes all day. We went back to the old condo when my husband was cleaning so we'd get our security deposit back, and Sebastian was a wreck within like two minutes...I really think it was the dog dander in the air and carpet!!

I (tearfully) asked Dr. Wood if we should find her a new home , and he said NO - with all of Bassy's problems, it wouldn't make a huge difference. Louise was very happy to hear this.

Does Meggy have environmental problems? I am sure Dr. Wood will do testing anyway, and dog is in the standard pediatric allergy pack...they'll test for that along with the top 8 and cats...as well as a few other things...

geez, I'm sorry! Not to scare you but augmentin is the one that gave Maggie hives. She's allergic to penicillin. Just be on the lookout. Hugs to you Melissa! and Sebastian too of course!

Thnaks, everyone! Sebastian is feeling a little better today. He is nowhere near as fussy and even started a new sound today - he has been crashing around the house screaming "Na na na na na na na na na........"

Kelly - we are doing a fire truck party! It is this Sunday (his actual birthday). We are also doing totally allergen free food (at least as far as we know) and setting up a handwashing station upon entry. I put cards in every invitation that said:

"As you probably already know, Sebastian has a long list of very severe food allergies. We believe the worst are eggs and nuts of any kind. We ask kindly that you do not bring any children’s foods that contain either of these ingredients (our home is egg and nut free). This will help keep our little man safe! We will be serving snacks to which Sebastian has no allergies – and have more options than you’d think (Thank goodness, or we’d all starve)! We are also anal and don’t wear shoes in the house because of Sebastian’s environmental allergies, so if you have nasty-looking feet that you don’t want anyone to see, wear some socks! J Thanks for your patience and understanding, and we look forward to celebrating with you on the 28th! "

I do NOT want to have to worry about him reacting that day...we are even putting away all his toys, and I don't even care if the kids get bored. It is too risky and honestly, I am OVER IT.

We're doing a veggie tray with tahini-free hummous, grilled chicken, corn tortillas, guacomole, salsa, UTZ chips, Archer Farms white corn chips, a fruit salad in a big watermelon for dessert (I am not bothering with trying to make a freaking allergen-free cake for 50 people.). My husband cooks, so he is making everything but the chips. This way we KNOW there are no hidden ingredients like random seasonings on the chicken. Wish us luck!!!
