Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Cold and cold Medicines

Hi all! Sorry I haven't posted much; we've all been sick but I have been up to date on goings-on.

Katie has a head cold combined with some allergies. It has made her reflux flare up to where we can hear the food coming up and then going back down and yes she is choking on it. I know that you can't give me any medical advice but was wondering what cold medicines you have given. The main problem is she has a horrible cough once she lays down that prevents her from sleeping well. She is 11 months old. Thanks!

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
I don't really like any cold meds but you could try adding Benedryl to your allergy routine if you haven't already it really drys them up so there isn't as much post-nasal drip to choke and cough on. Also, I like steam baths, plain old saline solution for the nose and Vicks vapor rub and a humidifier. They make plug ins and fans with the vapor stuff now. I hope she feels better soon. Colds are no fun!

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Depending on WHAT is being taken for the allergies you can't do benedryl. At least that is what we were told. Jedd takes Loratidine the generic for clritan. And we are not allowed to do benedryl because they are in the same class of drugs. We could overdose him. He takes the FULL dose of Claritan though.(5cc for his age and weight)

For us we are stuck. Jedd's nose is stuffy right now and he is coughing nad there is nothing we can do. I have a humidifier running in his room at night to hlep there. That's about it until the virus runs it's course.

Stinks right???

Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
For colds we use Triaminic Childrens Cold and Cough. I make sure not to give it at the same time of day as her allergy meds (Zyrtec in the am, Triaminic in the pm). Hope she feels better soon!

I would def check with your pedi about the cold medicine. Some dr's don't recommend giving it to young children. I also get the correct dosing (based on weight) from a pharmacist. We use Dimetapp Cold/Allergy and we use Delsym for coughs ( I like it b/c it lasts 12hrs). Another great remedy for coughs is rubbing lots of Baby Vicks on there feet and then putting socks on. I don't know how it works but it does. :) I also rub it on Abby's chest. Hope she feels better soon!

We haven't YET been given any allergy meds but I know that it is coming. She can't stand any air movement so we have turned off fans, air conditioner etc. in the hopes that it will get better.

The advice nurse kept telling me to have her sleep in her car seat or swing or something. I said she won't sleep if I am holding her so she def. won't sleep in her swing; the nurse acted like all babies sleep on mom, Ummm......mine doesn't! She is a tummy sleeper and moves all over the bed so we can't even raise her bed. That was the other suggestion; I asked how to keep her in place and was referred again to her car seat. I think the problem is compounded by the fact that she is eating and then refluxing it back up since she has 1)reflux and 2) PND.

Thanks for the advice! Jessica, I hope Jedd feels better soon too!!!

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
If you are not on any allergy meds. I would give Bendryl at bedtime. It dries them up so the nights aren't so bad. I give Katie mylana and benedryl before bed and it seems to be helping a bit.
Check with your
doctor first!
